Cam Newton goes No. 1 in AFC East mock

Little card in hand, I stroll to the lectern.

With the first pick in the 2011 AFC East reader mock draft, the Carolina Panthers select ... Cam Newton, quarterback, Auburn.

Ooooooooooooooo!

What an attention-grabber. That's the first domino to fall in our 32-part series that will take us up to the real draft.

As introduced Monday, readers are deciding each pick in our community mock by voting in the comments section underneath this article or beneath the link on my Facebook page. We're making one pick every weekday.

Feedback for the first choice was impressive. Eight prospects received at least one vote, another reminder this year's draft class lacks a clear-cut No. 1.

Newton edged out Missouri quarterback Blaine Gabbert by five votes and Alabama defensive lineman Marcell Dareus by six votes. Louisiana State cornerback Patrick Peterson was fourth.

If you need to do homework for any of the upcoming picks, you can check out ESPN.com's draft page. Remember, after the real draft we're going to compare our mock to Mel Kiper's and Todd McShay's to see how we fared. So do your research.

The Denver Broncos are on the clock with the second pick. Who will they select?
