
NCAA president Mark Emmert said a couple of weeks back that another round of conference realignment could be coming, as schools try to get in position for a proposed four-team college football playoff. The goal of a move, of course, would be for schools to capitalize financially and academically. Yet an examination of prior moves shows financial gain is not necessarily a given (see table below). The last time college football saw a major shift in conference alignment was when 16 schools moved from one FBS conference to another in 2004 and 2005.
