Ex-Steeler Jeff Reed Signs With 49ers

When the Bengals tried to sign Jeff Reed as soon as the Steelers cut him two weeks ago, Reed turned them down, saying he wanted to take the weekend off.

Apparently Reed's vacation is over -- the kicker signed with the 49ers to fill in for the injured Joe Nedney. Nedney has been out for two weeks with a sprained knee, but his previous replacement, Shane Andrus, was waived after a confidence-sapping 2-for-4 effort last week.

There is a chance that Reed could be the 49ers' long-term answer at kicker. He was given the Steelers' franchise tag during the offseason and was extremely reliable field goal kicker in difficult conditions during 2007-2009 (he went 77 of 86 over that stretch).
