UFC 146 set after Roy Nelson vs. Gabriel Gonzaga added

The UFC 146 dominoes have finally stopped falling, as the all-heavyweight main card is set. Roy Nelson will face Gabriel Gonzaga and Shane Del Rosario will fight Stipe Miocic.

The shake-up started on Friday, when Alistair Overeem withdrew from the title bout with Junior dos Santos after a pre-fight test showed elevated levels of testosterone. Overeem said he wanted time to resolve the issue with the Nevada Athletic Commission, but that left dos Santos without an opponent and UFC 146 without a main event.

Frank Mir stepped into the title fight, Antonio Silva was given the bout with Cain Velasquez, Nelson got Gonzaga, and Miocic, who was not originally on the card, stepped up to fight Del Rosario.

What do you think of the updates to the card? Tell us in the comments, on Facebook or on Twitter.

Steve Johnson to have groin surgery

Buffalo Bills leading receiver Steve Johnson announced on Twitter that he is in Philadelphia to undergo groin surgery. Johnson's agent told Buffalo television station WKBW that the procedure is "extremely minor." Johnson was slowed late last season with the nagging injury. He played through it and didn't miss any games. He re-signed a contract extension with the Bills this offseason. Johnson is an important part of Buffalo's offense. He caught 76 passes for 1,004 yards and seven touchdowns last season.

Eddie Yagin’s star rises; has Mark Hominick’s set?

Editor's note: Jay Busbee is cageside for UFC 145. Follow him on Twitter.

ATLANTA — Shortly after 10:30 Eastern on Saturday night at UFC 145, two careers crossed paths.

Mark Hominick, the onetime title contender who's fallen on hard times, squared off against the undistinguished, largely unknown Eddie Yagin. The result was the best fight of the night to that point, a featherweight bout that left both men bloodied and beaten.

Right from the start, Yagin made it clear that whatever Hominick's pedigree, Yagin wouldn't blanch. The so-called "Filipino Phenom" bored in on Hominick with lethal speed for seven uninterrupted minutes. Problem is, the fight went the full 15, and by the time it was done, both men were beaten beyond recognition

This was an upright fight; neither fighter even attempted a takedown. Yagin put Hominick on the mat with uppercuts followed by devastating overhand rights, combinations that raised an egg-sized swelling on Hominick's right cheek. And through the first half of the fight, it appeared that would be enough to do in the once-promising Canadian.

But Hominick didn't become a onetime championship challenger on reputation alone. And although he had a rough 2011, losing the championship bout in a decision and another fight in a seven-second knockout, he still had enough in the tank to turn Yagin's nose into a bloody mess.

As the second round closed and the third opened, Yagin's eyes widened, bringing to mind Mike Tyson's old line about everyone having a plan until they get punched in the face. And for a brief moment in the third round, it appeared that Hominick could right his listing career with a knockout of Yagin. But his punches weren't landing with enough force, his jabs weren't nearly quick enough, and Yagin, bloody face and all, stayed on his feet until the final horn.

After the fight, the Filipino Phenom was both gracious and elated. "Hominick is veteran and unbelievably badass," he said. "I was hoping I was going to get that fight with Mark, and the fight was exactly as I pictured it. I thank UFC for the opportunity. Because Hominick was favored, and a UFC veteran, and I'm a rookie UFC guy, I'm pretty happy about this win."

Hominick's future from here on out is uncertain. But Yagin's is as bright as the arena lights above him. Once he wipes the blood out of his eyes, he'll like what he sees.

Jon Jones’ next opponent: Dan Henderson

After Jon Jones defended the UFC light heavyweight belt with a win over Rashad Evans, questions immediately turned to his next opponent. At Saturday's post-fight press conference, UFC president Dana White confirmed Dan Henderson would get the next shot at trying to unseat Jones.

This title shot comes after Henderson had a banner year in 2011. He won the Strikeforce light heavyweight belt, beat MMA legend Fedor Emelianenko, then returned to the UFC with a win over Mauricio "Shogun" Rua in a fight that's considered one of the best of all time.

It will be Henderson's third chance to win the UFC belt. After winning titles in Pride, Henderson lost UFC title shots to Anderson Silva at middleweight and Quinton "Rampage" Jackson at light heavyweight. Back in 1998, Henderson won the UFC middleweight tournament at UFC 17, but that is the only UFC title he's won in his 15-year MMA career.

Though White didn't nail down a date for the Jones-Henderson bout, UFC 149 in Calgary was mentioned as a possibility.

Alistair Overeem, Chael Sonnen vs. Anderson Silva’s move to Vegas and Dan Henderson fill Reader Rants

In a very busy week, despite the lack of fights this weekend, you all had plenty to talk about. Reader Rants covered Alistair Overeem's suspension, Anheuser-Busch's strong words towards the UFC, the Chael Sonnen/Anderson Silva move to Las Vegas, and how Dan Henderson will fare against Jon Jones. Do you want to see your thoughts in Reader Rants? Like Cagewriter on Facebook and comment on the stories that show up in your newsfeed.

Not many of you bought Alistair Overeem's explanation for his elevated testosterone levels.

I want to believe Overeem, but where there is smoke, there is fire. The tests prior to the Lesnar fight had weird circumstances and now this? For a guy who proclaims innocence and knows the PED spotlight is squarely on his back, he should be the first to check the ingredients of anything he puts in his body. -- Ryan Wahl

I don't know science well enough, but he keeps on making excuses and doesn't really convince anyone that he's clean. Sure, he says everything with a straight face, but like Ryan said, where there's smoke, there's fire! -- Brandon Mendoza

Anheuser-Busch shared their displeasure with the UFC over the behavior of some fighters. One reader thought they should take a look inward.

I think it would be unfair if they let a few bad apples spoil the bunch. We're in such a sensitive age with the internet and social media, but UFC fighters aren't running around disparaging women, minorities or disabled people, they are making errant jokes like Anheuser-Busch does all the time. It's really too bad if a beer company with controversial commercials of it's own can't learn to turn the other cheek and just ask the UFC to introduce fines and consistency into it's policies about social media instead of threatening to pull their sponsorship. Talk about calling the kettle black. -- Joshua Smith

Chael Sonnen and Anderson Silva's rematch was moved to Las Vegas, and Silva isn't the only one disappointed in the move.

I'm disappointed, everyone has wanted to see how the fight is gonna go down on Anderson's home turf and this just helps Chael. It's still a good fight and if the card lives up to the hype it'll probably go down as the card of the year. -- Gabriel Martinez

Brazil fans are going to be disappointed in the UFC. This would've been the match they wanted out of any, and its been taken away from them. -- Manny Seda

Cagereaders had many answers for the question, how will Dan Henderson do against Jon Jones?

Hendo has NO advantages to use against Jones apart from experience. Height, reach, youth, strength, stamina, and the match all go to Jones. -- Donald Windley

Hendo will have to end it early, and he can do it! If Jones somehow manages to survive the 1st round (run instead of engage) and make it past half way into the second I think that the younger guy's ground game will be the difference. Too bad that, I say! Every MMA fan loves to see a knock out! Hendo deserves to go out a champ and Jones doesn't have the 'cred'. -- Kevin Astle

Another Belichick second-round miss?

Perhaps no other AFC East pick in the 2012 draft was more controversial than the New England Patriots’ selection of little-known defensive back Tavon Wilson of Illinois. Wilson, New England’s second-round pick, was the 24th rated safety by Scouts Inc. and wasn’t even invited to the NFL combine. This was viewed as a major reach by Patriots head coach Bill Belichick, who vehemently defended the pick. But looking deeper, Belichick's track record in the second round has been questionable for the past 10 drafts.

UFC 145 picks from Kevin Iole, Cagewriter and you

With UFC 145 finally (almost) here, we asked Cagereaders to give us your main card picks to run next to Kevin Iole's and mine. Read on for all of our picks. If you want to join in next time, follow Cagewriter on Facebook.

Mark Bocek vs. John Alessio

Kevin Iole, columnist:  I have wondered when the UFC would bring back Alessio, who has improved greatly since his previous stint with the promotion. But Joe Silva gave him no bargain in Bocek, Bocek is one tick off the top tier and usually wins unless he's fighting a legitimate title contender. I say Bocek neutralizes Alessio's standup and wins a decision. Pick -- Mark Bocek W3 John Alessio

Maggie Hendricks, Cagewriter: Alessio has taken his last three, but they were out of the UFC and he's taking on the very tough Bocek on two weeks' notice. Bocek should be able to grind out a decision win. Pick -- Mark Bocek W3 John Alessio

Jackson Torres, fan: This one is tough to call, Alessio is a veteran and has a lot of wins, but a lot of losses as well. What stands out as his weakness to me is 7 of his 14 losses are by submission. I feel if Bocek can get this to the ground quickly, he can finish it there. Pick -- Bocek Sub R2.

[ Related: Jon Jones-Rashad Evans feud adds intrigue to UFC 145 ]

Mark Hominick vs. Eddie Yagin

Kevin Iole:  Hominick is one of the division's best fighters, which he proved in his loss to champion Jose Aldo. His knockout loss to the Korean Zombie his last time out can be discounted. He got caught on the button just as the bout began. I think he's a cut above Yagin skill-wise and will break him down before stopping him. Pick -- Mark Hominick TKO2 Eddie Yagin

Maggie Hendricks: After two losses in a row, Hominick needs a big win. He has been training with Jeff Curran and his team to shake things up for this bout, which shouldn't last too long. Pick -- Mark Hominick KO2 Eddie Yagin

Jackson Torres, fan: Hominick needs a win badly as he has suffered back to back losses and a 7 second knock out at the hands of the Korean Zombie. Yagin has 15 wins with an equal amount of Subs, KO's and Decisions. How ever I feel Hominick will come out strong and this one and get back in the mix with a win. Pick -- Hominick R3 D

Miguel Torres vs. Michael McDonald

Kevin Iole: This is potentially a great fight and one I'm looking forward to with great interest. I could make a case for both guys, but I'll go with experience and take Torres. Torres also has to be hungry and motivated after he was briefly cut by the UFC and I think his experience advantage and his motivation will help him pull out a win in a fight that truly could go either way. Pick -- Miguel Torres W3 Michael McDonald

Maggie Hendricks: The classic match-up of young buck vs. veteran will turn on how Torres handles his first fight back since being cut from the UFC for an offensive tweet. If he plays it smart and doesn't charge in recklessly, he can hold off McDonald for three round. Pick -- Torres W3 Michael McDonald

Jackson Torres, fan: Miguel hasn't fought for a while and McDonald is on a roll right now coming off of that brutal KO of Soto. I feel Miguel will show some ring rust while McDonald utilizes his striking early and finishing it. Pick -- McDonald R2 TKO

Brendan Schaub vs. Ben Rothwell

Kevin Iole: When Schaub is clicking, he's a handful for any heavyweight. He makes mistakes that cause him troubles, but I think he'll land something flashy and stop Big Ben. Pick -- Brendan Schaub KO2 Ben Rothwell

Maggie Hendricks: Schaub's loss to Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira in Brazil was tough to take, and he'll want to erase that memory as soon as possible. His speed will be too much for Rothwell. Pick -- Brendan Schaub KO1 Ben Rothwell.

William Corral, fan: I'm going out on a limb here and picking Big Ben Rothwell. Not that I think he's a better fighter, but Schaub will break his hand from repeated punches to Big Ben's Noggin, and then Rothwell will collapse from exhaustion on top of Schaub in the 2nd round. You could classify that as a submission.

Rory MacDonald vs. Che Mills

Kevin Iole: I believe MacDonald is a future champion and this bout is a huge showcase for him. Though MacDonald may look to use his jiu-jitsu, he's also go excellent hands and I see him wearing Mills down and stopping him late. Pick -- Rory MacDonald TKO3 Che Mills

Maggie Hendricks: Though Mills impressed with a 40-second TKO of Chris Cope, MacDonald is quite the jump up in competition. MacDonald's well-rounded game will be much too much. Pick -- MacDonald TKO2 Che Mills

Jackson Torres, fan: This is a very interesting match as Mills destroyed Cope in his UFC debut, how ever Cope isn't that highly ranked in the division and we still don't know what Mills can really do. I feel Rory has the experience when it comes to opponents and that he will get away with the win. I expect this to be fight of the night. Pick -- MacDonald R3 D

Champion Jon Jones vs. Rashad Evans

Kevin Iole: I think the long odds favoring Jones are ludicrous. I've been writing for a long time that Evans is a terrific fighter who, for some reason, doesn't get enough credit. I think his quickness and his power will cause Jones a lot of issues. But it's hard to see Evans winning given Jones' takedown defense, his length and his ability to land hard shots from any position. Evans gives him some anxious moments, but Jones is worthy of the hype and should pull it out to retain his belt. Pick -- Jon Jones W5 Rashad Evans

Maggie Hendricks: Thank heavens this fight is finally happening. More than a year of build-up is plenty. If Evans can hold off Jones' attacks to last five rounds, he should win. Unfortunately for Evans, I don't think he will. Jon Jones Sub3 Rashad Evans

Timothy Milloff,  fan: Rashad Evans has always been underrated. He came up the ranks the hard way, thanks to Dana. He is a great fighter and a great guy, always the fighter the fans boo. He will upset Jones like Ali did Liston.
