Knockout of the week: Dan Henderson introduces Wanderlei Silva to his fist

For the Knockout of the Week, we jump into the DeLorean and head back to 2007 for Dan Henderson's last Pride fight. Here, he is fighting fellow Pride star Wanderlei Silva, and shows the "Axe Murderer" just what the H-Bomb looks like.

When the UFC swallowed up Pride, it took many of its fighters and its fight footage, but left behind its pageantry. Example one: the confetti that came down at the end of Henderson's win. What do we need to do to bring confetti back? It will add an air of festivity that is sorely missing from the end of fight nights.

What's not missing from the UFC is Henderson hitting people in the head really hard. He'll get another chance to show off that H-Bomb on Sept. 1 against Jon Jones. Is he the guy who can stop Jones? Tell us in the comments, on Twitter or on Facebook.

ONE FC 5's Baroni looking to overachieve with Coleman-like grand-prix moment

Despite losing five of his past six bouts, the only number that matters to 36-year-old Phil Baroni is two - a second chance in ONE Fighting Championship.

The fifth installment of the upstart Asian organization is a launching pad for the "New York Bad Ass" if everything goes the Long Island native's way.

And at Friday's ONE FC 5 event, the big-show vet hopes to pull off a Mark Coleman-like moment.

Diego Sanchez, Don Cerrone, Cain Velasquez: The Morning News Roundup – 8.7.12

Any day when the news doesn't involve a fighter getting injured, a fighter failing a drug screening or a fighting going to jail is a good one, and hey, today looks like a good one.  A well-liked scrapper is switching weight classes again, a co-main event fighter has given his upcoming bout a thumbs-up, a heavyweight wants his title shot, and another fighter went to the doctor, but that's it.  No cuts requiring stitches, no marijuana metabolites and no 40-person brawls — as the indomitable Ice Cube would say, "It was a good day."

  • Winner of the inaugural season of "The Ultimate Fighter" and longtime fan-favorite fighter Diego Sanchez announced that he's moving down to lightweight.  Again.  If you'll recall, his last trip down to the 155-pound weight class ended with a showdown against B.J. Penn, and that match-up wasn't even competitive.  However, Sanchez's recent return to welterweight yielded mixed results, so you know how that goes.

  • UFC lightweight stalwart Don Cerrone says that he's cool with fighting Melvin Guillard this weekend at UFC 150.  Which is good because it's only the co-main event and Cerrone signed the bout agreement months ago and if he were to suddenly say he wasn't cool with it the UFC would probably sue him for breach of contract plus damages.

  • Who will be next to challenge UFC heavyweight champ Junior dos Santos?  Will it be Dutch behemoth Alistair Overeem, who's currently serving a suspension for excessive horsemeat?  Or should it be former champ Cain Velasquez, who turned Antonio Silva into a Dexter-ish blood-splatter pattern on the Octagon floor back at UFC 146?

  • Brazilian light-heavyweight striker Wagner Prado reportedly saw a doctor yesterday for his eye injury, which he incurred via accidental foul at the hands (or fingers) of Phil Davis on UFC on FOX 4 Saturday night.  No word yet on the prognosis, but it's great that Prado is getting professional help.  Eye injuries are no joke.

Anderson Silva says he didn’t finish Thales Leites at UFC 97 out of respect

Anderson Silva's last three middleweight title defenses have ended in knockout or technical knockout in the first or second round. He has been on a tear that has cemented him as one of, if not the greatest mixed martial artist in the sport's history.

But before the recent tear and the fifth-round submission win over Chael Sonnen, Silva went through a period that can only be described as weird. In wins over Patrick Cote, Demian Maia and Thales Leites, Silva was not the dominating force we're used to seeing now.

At UFC 97, Leites was clearly outmatched, but Silva couldn't -- or wouldn't -- finish his fellow Brazilian. Three years later, Silva explained why he didn't finish the fight to Brazilian outlet Tatame.

"There's no such thing as holding back. I want to finish as soon as possible. The only time I did it was because he was a friend of mine. It was against Thales Leites. We went until the last round because he's a friend of mine and I respect him", Anderson said.

Since it was three years ago and he's been so dominant since, it's hard to hold this against Silva. However, it puts a new wrinkle in the question of teammates and friends fighting.

Donald Cerrone and Melvin Guillard were teammates, but their scrap at UFC 150 was one of the best 1:16-long fights I have ever watched. Neither held back out of respect, as Silva said he did against Leites.

Their fight gave ammunition to UFC president Dana White, who often gets frustrated by fighters saying they don't want to fight teammates. If teammates Cerrone and Guillard could not just fight, but knock each other silly, why not push teammates to fight?

Silva's comments say why it can still be tricky to force fighters to fight friends and teammates. His bout with Leites caused White to say, "I've never been embarrassed of a UFC fight like I was tonight." While White and the UFC can push fighters to get in the Octagon together, they cannot make them fight the way they want.

Tarec Saffiedine still waiting, still hoping for Strikeforce welterweight title shot

Not much has changed for Tarec Saffiedine since his win earlier this month.

Well, other than a slightly high-profile injury coming out of his training camp at Team Quest involving Dan Henderson. But other than that, it's the usual for Saffiedine - waiting. Just waiting, and hoping.

Saffiedine was hoping his win over Roger Bowling at "Strikeforce" Rousey vs. Kaufman" would get him a welterweight title shot. But if that is to be the case, he doesn't have an answer yet.

Wildcats defense aims for 'A' game in 2012

Every defense talks about the A-word -- aggressiveness -- and Northwestern's is no exception. For the better part of the past two seasons, the Wildcats' defense too often has found itself in a, well, defensive posture. Opposing offenses have moved the ball too easily against the Wildcats, particularly on third down, which used to be a strength for the unit. It's why Wildcats coaches place such a premium on the A-word entering the 2012 season. To get there, they bring up another A-word.
