By Mark GonzalesPHOENIX, Ariz. - Manager Ozzie Guillen plans to talk to general manager Ken Williams but intimated Saturday that Mark Teahen could play the outfield next week as the Chicago White Sox get ready to settle on the roles on their opening day roster.
Teahen is battling Brent Morel for the starting third base job, but Morel is considered the better defensive player. Teahen, coming off an injury-plagued 2010 season, is signed through 2012 and is batting .385 despite going 0-for-3 in an 8-3 loss to Oakland.
"It's going to be a fight," Guillen said of the third base and backup outfield spots. "I might talk to Kenny to make sure we get Teahen a few games in the outfield just to protect ourselves and him and see him work. We'll get him some opportunities to be in the outfield before we break camp if (Teahen) is not the third baseman.
"He will play third base. He's on the team. Like I say, he's going to be at third base, right field or whatever he's going to be playing. But in the meanwhile, that's where we have him playing. We'll get him a start in the outfield to take fly balls out there just in case."
Teahen played the outfield as well as third base with Kansas City before joining the Sox in 2010.
