Octagon, but no fighters, in Japanese ad for UFC 144

In the United States, we're used to seeing UFC pay-per-view ads that heavily feature the fighters on the card. Even when they break from the fight-highlight-norm-with-voiceover-and-music, like with the UFC 129 commercial featuring Georges St. Pierre and Jake Shields, the advertising still revolves around the fighters.

With the ad airing in Japan before this weekend's UFC 144 bout, the ad features the shadow of an octagon and the voice of cage announcer Bruce Buffer.

No Frankie Edgar or Benson Henderson to represent the main event, not even the more familiar Quinton "Rampage" Jackson. Would that be enough to get you to tune in? Tell us in the comments, on Facebook or on Twitter.

Thanks, Bloody Elbow.

Switching camps: Gray Maynard’s move from Xtreme Couture to AKA

With the massive growth of MMA, the stakes have gone through the roof for fighters in the UFC. Between improved salaries, discretionary bonuses, appearance fees and marketing deals, the difference between a champion and a contender can be staggering.

"These guys are making millions of dollar in every fight. If Gray Maynard was the champion right now, he'd be a millionaire. [...] He's not. He lost a lot of money by losing that fight," Frank Trigg said on "The MMA Insiders Show" on Las Vegas' ESPNRadio1100/98.9 FM.

Following a loss to Frank Edgar at UFC 136, Maynard felt that sting. He'd come so close, but in the end, Edgar has the belt and the big assignments.

[Related: Yahoo! Sports pound-for-pound MMA rankings]

Maynard, faced with climbing back up the ladder, felt it was time for a change. A Las Vegas mainstay since 2006, he left Xtreme Couture and moved to American Kickboxing Academy in San Jose, Ca. But it wasn't simply about freshening things up.

"Gray just was not prepared. It was really one of those deals where a coach within his staff just would not pay attention any other coaches. He was getting really upset if any other coach tried to explain to him 'hey, this is how hard I'm going to push Gray in my session. You need to back off in your session so he can recover," said Trigg, a former trainer partner of Maynard's at Xtreme Couture. "[Maynard] wasn't prepared. It's ultimately up to one coach that didn't pay attention."

John Gunderson, another former teammate of Maynard's in Sin City, echoed the same sentiment about Maynard being less than prepped for the biggest fight of his life."The last fight Gray wasn't mentally prepared or physically prepared for that fight. I don't think he trained hard enough and he knows that. I think if Gray really put the time in and the work in, Gray could finish him," Gunderson said.

Maynard made to decision to extricate himself from the drama well before the Edgar fight took place.

"We knew six weeks before the fight," Trigg said. "Gray said 'look win, lose or draw, this is my last fight. I'm out of here. I gotta leave Xtreme Couture."

[Video: Watch Jon Jones get attacked by a police dog]

Randy Couture, who was away from the gym for much of the early part of 2011, returned to find a big mess and one of his top fighters leaving. Couture cleaned house with coaches Gil Martinez and Ron Frazier moving elsewhere.

Martinez, with a boxing background, was Maynard's main coach. Whether it was his fault or not that Maynard underachieved, it's pretty clear that the former Michigan State wrestler was way too boxing-centric in his fights against Edgar.

It sounds like Maynard is never going to make the mistake of putting his eggs all in one basket.

"He's not officially joining AKA, he's going up there to train. We've all come to the realization that you can't be in one spot anymore," Trigg said. "If you want to be a great MMA fighter, you have to go down and train with Jose Aldo in Brazil. [...] You've got to go to different places. That's why GSP got so good so quickly. He didn't stay in Montreal. Gray has realized that's what he has to do."

Listen to the rest of the conversation as Trigg talks about whether fighters who bounce around to different camps need a head coach to pull everything together.

Here's hoping the change allows Maynard to take things to the next level. He may still be the best guy in the world at lightweight, but with all the competition out there at 155 pounds, he's probably got a long climb back up the ladder.

Jovial Yushin Okami credits Anderson Silva loss for new focus ahead of UFC 144

TOKYO - There was something obviously different about Yushin Okami the moment he walked into Wednesday's UFC 144 pre-event press conference in Tokyo.

From the ever-present smile on his face to the boxing-heavy workout session (complete with Anderson Silva-esque arm-hanging and slick shoulder rolls), Okami was in a completely different zone.

And it's not just for show, Okami said. Following his UFC 134 loss to middleweight champ Silva, "Thunder" believes he's a completely new man.

BYU to play at Nebraska in 2015

BYU will play at Nebraska on Sept. 5, 2015, in the first meeting between the two football programs, the schools announced Thursday. “This is a great opportunity to play an outstanding football team in one of the storied football stadiums in the country,” BYU athletic director Tom Holmoe said in a statement. “Nebraska was looking for a game in 2015 and the timing was good for BYU. Stephen Thompson interview: ‘Wonderboy’ could shake up welterweight division

The welterweight division has been a rough place for pure strikers, but Stephen Thompson may have a chance to change that.

With a decorated karate background, "Wonderboy" is looking to alter the way MMA fans, fighters and trainer look at that discipline.

Lyoto Machida is one of the only high level MMA star to still use karate as his main discipline. No one is saying Thompson is near Machida, but he has a little "Dragon" in him.

In a blog with Fightline, Thompson said the karate stance can be a big advantage in a world filled with takedown artists.

"The average MMA guys have a boxer's stance which makes it easier for a wrestler when they try and take you down. I tend to stand sideways and that gives them only one leg to shoot for, it tends to make it more difficult to try and take me down," wrote Thompson.

Thompson, 28, was unbeaten in the karate/kickboxing ranks. He was 37-0 as an amateur and 20-0 as a pro. He got turned onto MMA when Georges St-Pierre's camp asked him to work with the UFC 170-pound champ. GSP returned the favor by working with Thompson on fight night at UFC 143.

Having Georges St. Pierre walk out with me to my corner really helped me out. He doesn't walk out with just anyone and I was like whoa, you're going to walk out with me! He said he wanted to be there for me and I have to tell you that I felt honored; I thought that was really cool. I was a little nervous and excited at the same time to get started, and GSP came in and gave me some really good advice.

Thompson's debut was ridiculous. Dan Stittgen got a boot to the head and nearly went to sleep. The kicked dubbed the "Moneymaker" got Thompson the Knockout of the Night award, good for $65,000. Much of the night was a blur for Thompson. Even the opening introduction when UFC ring announcer Bruce Buffer botched his first name calling him Stef-fen.

I was in such a trance that I didn't even realize that Bruce Buffer pronounced my name wrong during the introductions. He apologized to me afterwards, but I didn't care.

Thompson said he'd love to bounce back quickly and get a fight at UFC 145 in Atlanta on Apr. 21. Thompson is a South Carolina native. He grew up about two hours north of Atlanta.

ManningWatch: Miami's billboard, website

Now it's getting serious. After weeks of speculation that Peyton Manning could be a fit for the Miami Dolphins, there is now a website and billboard in South Florida to help in the recruiting effort. ManningToMiami.com was launched on Wednesday, and a huge billboard is on Interstate-595 for all to see. Here is the picture of the billboard courtesy of the Palm Beach Post. It shows a graphic of what Manning could look like in a Dolphins' uniform. The Indianapolis Colts are expected to part ways with Manning before his reported $28 million bonus is due in March.

TUF 1 alums Quarry and Florian looking for smooth transition to broadcasting

Once the crowds and competition are gone for athletes there's only a few ways to stay in the game. If you're not coaching then the other option is broadcasting. As organized MMA reaches its 20-year mark, more and more fighters are beginning the transition into the media.

Guys like Frank Trigg and Bas Rutten began the process a while back and now we're seeing some of the more recent UFC veterans working towards the next phase of their lives. Kenny Florian and Nate Quarry have a bonds of sorts. They'll always be part of the special crew that made up Season one of "The Ultimate Fighter" back in 2005. Now they've got something else in common. They're fighters turned broadcasters.

Quarry  debuts tonight on Spike TV as one of the hosts of "MMA Uncensored Live" at 11 p.m. ET/PT. He says his show with radio host Craig Carton and MMA video interviewer Mike Straka will break the mold.

"It seems on the radio you get a lot more guys who give their opinion and talk about who they want to win. but as soon as they transfer from radio to TV it's like watching paint dry. Everyone's afraid to get excited about the fight and talk about who they think is going to win," said Quarry.

Quarry, 39, brought it pretty strong on several topics during a discussion on ESPN1100/98.9 FM. He spoke candidly about his former division and its champ.

"I'm sure he's been making so much money over the past few years and then you convertt that to Brazilian dollars, he's probably set for two or three lifetimes," Quarry said. "[...] Why would he necessarily want to go back into a three or fourth month fight camp, always in pain, always have to wake up and train when you've done so much already? There comes a point where he's saying "you know what? I've got enough money. I've got enough fame. My country loves me. I've set plenty of records.'"

Quarry thinks a victory over Chael Sonnen this summer could be the end of the road for Silva.

Meanwhile, Florian is under the UFC banner working for Fuel TV. His initial foray into broadcasting came with ESPN as part of its "MMA Live" show. Now his role's a bit different as the live fight analyst on Fuel TV. Florian, 35, knows the sport, can articulate the complicated aspects of it and will be critical when necessary. But he's not going to shred fighters, because he's been there.

"I hated it when I got critiqued as a fighter. So much goes into a fight that people never see, the countless hours of training, the diet, dealing with injuries. The worst feeling in the world, for me anyway, is to lose. Knowing how I felt, it's been hard for me to rip apart a guy after his fight," Florian told SI.com.

MMA is going to be well represented by a slew of former fighters who'll probably enter the media side of things over the next few years. Brian Stann made his TV debut at the Fuel TV 1 card and in just one showing exhibited the potential to be a top of the heap media personality.

UFC 144's Anthony Pettis looks to follow 'worst year' of career with his best

TOKYO - As Anthony Pettis looks a few spots above his name on UFC 144's fight card, he knows it could be he - not Benson Henderson - fighting for the UFC lightweight title in Saturday's main event.

Fourteen months after defeating Henderson in the WEC's final event, Pettis now watches his former foe taking a headlining slot in a championship bout on a huge UFC event.

But rather than regret or jealousy, Pettis said it simply provides motivation as he prepares for his UFC 144 bout with fellow contender Joe Lauzon.

Matchmaker, matchmaker: Fights for ‘Mayhem,’ Evan Dunham and Eddie Alvarez

Though MMA's spring schedule is not as dizzying as its winter pace, there are plenty of fight cards that need filling. To that end:

-- Jason "Mayhem" Miller will take on C.B. Dollaway at UFC 146 on Memorial Day weekend in Las Vegas. This is Miller's first fight since losing the Michael Bisping at "The Ultimate Fighter" season 14 finale. Dollaway has been finished in his last two bouts, a TKO to Jared Hamman and a KO to Mark Munoz.

-- Evan Dunham and Edson Barboza will also meet at UFC 146. Dunham just fought at UFC on Fox 2, scoring a win over Nik Lentz. Known for his powerful striking, Barboza has never lost. His knockout of Terry Etim at UFC 142 was called one of the best knockouts in UFC history.

-- In Bellator, Eddie Alvarez and Shinya Aoki are expected to meet in April. Alvarez was submitted by an Aoki heel hook in 2008. After that loss, he won seven straight before losing a classic title bout to Michael Chandler. Aoki is currently holds the DREAM lightweight belt.

Who will win these bouts? Talk to us in the comments, on Facebook, or on Twitter.

UFC on Fuel TV 1 postfight: Dana White hammers himself and the NSAC

Dana White always says what's on his mind. He's not afraid to call someone out even if it's himself.

Seconds after Jake Ellenberger crawled across the finish line to win his three-round fight against Diego Sanchez, fans began asking "what happened to all UFC main events being five rounds?"

Fuel TV's Ariel Helwani asked White.

"Because we blew it. It should've been a five round fight. [...] I'm looking at the fight going ... 'yeah, this should've been five rounds.' I think that when Diego and Ellenberger went back in there for that fourth the place would've went crazy. People were ready for it at home," said White.

White wouldn't name names. He took the blame. He confirmed it was not Fuel TV's decision. More importantly, he said all main events will be five rounders. Back in June, White announced that would be the case for all main events. Somehow this fight slipped through the cracks.

White also commented on the latest with Nick Diaz's likely suspension coming from the Nevada State Athletic Commission. He knows Diaz will probably get pounded and he has little problem with that.

"How about the Nevada State Athletic Commission royally kissed Floyd Mayweather's ass when he walked in there. This guy is going to jail," White said. "The judge is allowing him to not go to jail until he has his fight. Right?"

It still annoys White that Chael Sonnen was denied a license by the state to coach on "The Ultimate Fighter." Meanwhile, Floyd Mayweather facing jail time had his jail arrival delayed and got a license from the commission to fight on May 5.

"You know how much money we bring into Las Vegas every year with the fights that we put on? You know how much we contribute to the city of Las Vegas? Do you think for a second if we had a fighter that was going to go to jail that the athletic commission would license him to fight so that the fight could go on? There's no way in hell," White said. "Am I the only guy on this [expletive] planet who thinks that's crazy? Seriously. It just blows my mind."

White was very complimentary of the effort turned in by Sanchez calling him a professional. When asked about the right weight class for Sanchez, White said he can fight anywhere he wants.

He wasn't so complimentary of Dave Herman. A chiseled, athletic heavyweight, Herman fought well in the first round but lacked focus to stick with a gameplan against Stefan Struve. The 6-foot-11 Struve eventually used his length and effective combinations to put Herman away. White didn't rip Herman's performance, but criticized his prefight antics.

"I like Dave Herman. The stuff that he pulled this week? I can't stand that stuff," White told Fuel TV.

That stuff was Herman growing a huge beard and then dying his beard and thick body hair all black. Not the biggest deal, but when you lose the way Herman did, it opens the door for the critics.

"Listen, if you want to get noticed ... get noticed for your fighting skills," White said. "Not for coming in like a gorilla or wearing pink scarfs. And coming in to "Macho Man?" As I was sitting there, I'm thinking 'did I seriously let him come into this song?'"

White said he's not anti-Village People, but he's not into the joking around.
