Invicta FC vs. Strikeforce? Headliner Shayna Baszler just wants to rule the world

Shayna Baszler knows her opportunity on Saturday is a big one.

With a win over Sara McMann in the main event of Invicta FC 2, Baszler not only would hand McMann her first loss, but she'd also likely work her way to an Invicta bantamweight title shot in October.

And then there's the little matter of raising her profile on the bigger stage of women's MMA.

3-point stance: Rebirth of a rivalry?

1. It wouldn’t be the first time I’m wrong, but I don’t think there are going to be a lot of transfers from Penn State. Backup corner Tim Buckley is going home to North Carolina State. Marquee tailback Silas Redd is being wooed by USC, a top-five team with a gaping hole at his position. Backup quarterback Rob Bolden is talking to LSU about going there to be ... a backup quarterback. Coach Bill O’Brien will lose a few battles, but it appears as if he isn’t losing the war.

Morning take: Tom Brady is confident

Here are the most interesting stories Tuesday in the AFC East: Veteran Pro Bowl quarterback Tom Brady is confident going into another season with the New England Patriots. Morning take: This is a good group around Brady. He has all the offensive weapons he needs, and the defense has improved. The Patriots are rightfully one of the favorites to make another title run. Can the Miami Dolphins solve their red zone woes by passing? Morning take: Miami was very conservative last year in the red zone and settled for too many field goals under former coach Tony Sparano.

Rex report: Ready, set, stretch

CORTLAND, N.Y. -- The tweaks are back. The Jets, who dealt with a rash of hamstring injuries in minicamp, are experiencing another run of soft-issue injuries. Rex Ryan is so concerned that he's planning to double the stretching time at the beginning of practice, which will affect the 8 a.m. start time. (Stay tuned for changes.) They will stretch for 20 minutes instead of 10. It also prompted Ryan to cut short a two-minute drill scheduled for the end of Monday's practice.

Penn State's Mauti shines by letting it fly

CHICAGO -- Penn State linebacker Michael Mauti had just come off the field from 7-on-7 work around 8 a.m. Thursday morning when he got a call from head coach Bill O'Brien. "Hey, Mike," O'Brien said. "You've got to be on a plane at 9:30." Mauti was a last-minute addition to Penn State's player contingent for Big Ten media days, a contingent that very nearly didn't come to Chicago at all. But Mauti ended up being arguably the best interview subject here, offering an impassioned defense of his team and railing against the NCAA transfer rules.

Veteran manager Alex Davis suggests motivated reasoning could factor into judging issues

Never leave it in the hands of the judges.

It's an unfortunate reality in the current MMA landscape and one that seems to rear its ugly head each and every weekend. Veteran manager Alex Davis, a frequent contributor to MMAjunkie.com, was recently involved in just such a situation in his native Brazil.

Searching for answers, Davis believes he may have stumbled upon an unfortunate reality: motivated reasoning. Could it be that maybe judges aren't quite as inept as we all think?

MMA Marketplace: The latest in handmade MMA items, including a sparkly bow and a really odd Fedor painting

MMA inspires arts, crafts, and several other handmade goods that don't fit in any easily discernible category. If there's something MMA-related you desire, there's a good chance you can find it somewhere on the internet. For example, look at the vast array of stuff available on Etsy, the online marketplace devoted to handmade stuff.

You know what MMA needs more of? Sparkly bows. This one can be yours for $9.25.

Never Forgotten Design will make you pretty cool invitations. They'll turn a UFC poster -- in this instance, UFC 107's poster with B.J. Penn and Diego Sanchez -- into an invitation. Tell me you wouldn't love opening up that kind of invite. For $15, Never Forgotten will do the design for you to get printed.

Dan Hardy fans can show their love to the British fighter with a feather replica of his mohawk. Buy it for $55, then wear it when reading how Matthew Riddle has been calling him out. Put it on again when heading to Hardy's bout with Amir Sadollah at UFC on Fuel 5. Pair it with a bandana, and you've got a ready-made Halloween costume. When headed to the grocery store and bank, wear it to fancy up your day. Really, there's no end to its uses.

And this next painting depicts Fedor Emelianenko as an angel speaking a language that is not Russian. I ... I don't know. Just look.

It -- whatever it is -- can be yours for $37.

All 28 fighters for Saturday's Invicta FC 2 card are in the books and official for their fights.

All but two fighters made weight on their first attempts Friday. Main-event bantamweights Sara McMann and Shayna Baszler each were on the mark for their fights. And co-main event fighters Alexis Davis and Hitomi Akano also hit their marks.

Friday's official weigh-in event took place at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Kansas City, Mo. Saturday's card takes place at the historic Memorial Hall across the river in Kansas City, Kan.

MMA oversight group makes scoring change recommendations

If you're one of the many, many MMA fans who have complained about the scoring of an MMA fight, you may have some recourse soon. The Association of Boxing Commissions, the national group all state commissions belong to, have made suggestions to changes in the scoring system.

While they don't advocate moving away from the 10-point must system, where the fighter who wins the round earns 10 points, they do offer clarification to what wins a round.

1. Effective defense is removed as a criteria.

This makes sense. There are few situations in sports where defense scores points without becoming the offense first. A safety in football is the only of the big four American sports. The inherent job of defense is to prevent the opponent from scoring points. Good defense should set up a good offense in MMA.

2. Striking and grappling are now given equal weight in scoring. From the ABC's suggestions:

The old scoring system rewarded striking (as a primary consideration) more than grappling. Mixed Martial Arts is based on two skill sets - striking and grappling. The committee felt that grappling should not be a secondary factor in determining the outcome of a match. Grappling has a definitive skill set and athleticism and offensive capabilities which when used correctly can effectively end a fight. As such grappling skills should be rewarded and given equal weight to striking.

Grapplers everywhere will dance with joy if this change is passed. Jeff Curran's loss to Takeya Mizugaki and Miguel Torres' loss to Demetrious Johnson might have turned out differently with this provision in place.

3. Replace "damage" with "effective." We can assume the committee meant effectiveness, because who wants to replace a noun with an adjective? In short, the committee wanted a term that didn't make them feel so icky.

1. The legal considerations surrounding the term "Damage" as a descriptor were given considerable weight and as such the committee felt that using the word "Damage" may contribute to the potential for liability in the event of any litigation that commissions may find themselves involved in.

2. The sport of MMA is still relatively new and has not received sanctioning in various jurisdictions.  The committee felt that "Damage" as a descriptor may play a factor in helping to determine future sanctioning if the term was taken out of context with many opposed to MMA as a sport.

This would also prevent the ineffective argument from fighters at post-fight press conferences who point to cuts and bruises on their opponent as proof of winning.

The ABC votes on the committee's recommendations next week. Do you like the recommendations? Should they add any more? Tell us in the comments, on Facebook or Twitter.
