According to several media outlets that covered the meeting, there will be some restrictions in place:
- Beer sales will end in the middle of the third quarter.
- A patron is allowed amaximum of two beers per purchase.
- No beer sales in the student section. Mandatory ID checks. And beer will be sold in plastic bottles.
West Virginia athletic director Oliver Luck made the proposal to the board because he believes selling beer in the stadium will curb binge drinking outside the stadium. Some 300 fans wrote letters to the Board of Governors expressing their opinions, and many of those were against the measure. Also as part of the measure, West Virginia will not longer allow fans who leave at halftime to re-enter the stadium.
Luck had this to say in a statement:
I am pleased that our Board of Governors approved the new policy allowing for controlled sale of beer at Milan Puskar Stadium.
By changing the re-entry procedure and smoking areas at the stadium, along with today's change in policy, I believe we have taken a step forward toward our goal of a safer, friendlier and more civil game day experience.
We can now follow the path of many of our Big East colleagues and control the sale of beer in our stadium. We have much planning to do with our public safety officials and event staff, but we will be ready to implement our plan for the 2011 football season.
