Jets trying to tackle busy 2011 offseason

New York Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum held a news conference Friday to wrap up the 2010 season and address several issues moving forward.

Some highlights with my thoughts:

The Jets probably won't re-sign any of their players before the collective bargaining agreement expires March 4. This probably is the most prudent approach. The Jets would benefit from knowing the new salary cap structure rather than simply guessing on whether or not their players will fit under it. Teams also would prefer to know how free agency will be determined under the next CBA. Right now, we can't say for sure who will be restricted or unrestricted or what veteran minimum salaries will be.

Tannenbaum hopes to keep all three free-agent receivers: Braylon Edwards, Santonio Holmes and Brad Smith. I'm skeptical the Jets can pull it off. All are coming off big years, and it will be difficult to match all offers from other teams. But if the Jets can pull it off, the happiest man in the organization will be Mark Sanchez. Tannenbaum declined to speculate on whether or not the Jets would be interested in a post-prison Plaxico Burress.

Free-agent inside linebacker David Harris "remains a top priority for us." Harris, to me, is the most important free agent for the Jets. It's much easier to find a receiver in free agency than a stud linebacker such as Harris. He has led the Jets in tackles each of the past two seasons and makes all the on-field defensive calls. I highly doubt the Jets let him get away.

Brian Schottenheimer will be back as offensive coordinator. I realize some Jets fans are disgusted with Schottenheimer's play-calling in the AFC Championship Game, but he's a gem. Deep back-to-back runs into the postseason with a raw quarterback is a major accomplishment. And let's not forget he had the Jets humming with Brett Favre at quarterback until Favre's right arm started falling apart in 2008.

Sanchez will get "a couple of opinions" on his injured throwing shoulder before deciding if he'll have surgery. The Jets don't want to cut on their quarterback unless they have to. But the sooner they make a decision, the better so Sanchez can begin the rehab process. One of the overlooked traits Sanchez has developed in his two years is toughness. He has taken quite a few shots in the pocket and on the run, but he stays on the field.

Tannenbaum expects LaDainian Tomlinson and Jason Taylor to be on the 2011 roster. Tomlinson and Taylor are under contract, but the Jets could release them. Tomlinson lost effectiveness as the season wore on, but he can be a quality backup for Shonn Greene and adds value in the passing game as a receiver and in blitz protection. Taylor clearly is nearing the end of the line, and he knows it. But he wasn't a liability and provided leadership Tannenbaum said was "really hard to quantify."

First-round draft choice Kyle Wilson's future is "one of our paramount objectives for the offseason." The day the Jets drafted Wilson 29th overall, head coach Rex Ryan declared Wilson would be their nickelback and a great punt returner. Even with Darrelle Revis absent all summer because of a contract dispute, Wilson couldn't seize the opportunity and fell behind Drew Coleman on the depth chart. Tannenbaum cited inconsistency as Wilson's biggest problem.

Right tackle Damien Woody and fullback Tony Richardson probably won't be back. Tannenbaum didn't make those statements, but that's what I read between the lines. Woody turned 33 during the season and recently underwent Achilles surgery. He also missed games with a knee injury. Wayne Hunter or Vladimir Ducasse could take over for him. The Jets cut Richardson before the season and brought him back. They also have fullback John Conner waiting in the wings.

Vernon Gholston sounds like a goner. The sixth overall pick in 2008 was a healthy scratch in the playoffs. Tannenbaum diplomatically said the Jets "are going to see if there's anything else to try, but he has been given his share of opportunities, and it could be time to move on." Move over Mike Mamula.

Tony Gonzalez Tears Through Pro Bowl Record Books as NFC South Shines

It wasn't a bad day's work for the NFC South in the Pro Bowl. You can't get too excited about a game played at half speed, but what the heck. That's the Pro Bowl, a colossal waste of time and easily the most useless of the pro all-star games.

The Falcons had a day, though. Quarterback Matt Ryan was 9 of 13 for 118 yards and two touchdowns with an interception. Running back Michael Turner ran eight times for 53 yards and wide receiver Roddy White had five catches for 69 yards.

Brent Grimes, the Falcons cornerback, intercepted a Peyton Manning pass, which had to be a big thrill. Did he get Manning to sign the ball?

Tight end Tony Gonzalez added to his Pro Bowl record for career receptions (42) and moved into first place in Pro Bowl lore in touchdown catches with his sixth.

Jon Beason of the Carolina Panthers ran an interception back for a touchdown, which was a nice treat for a hard-working guy who just went through a 2-14 season.

Donald Penn, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' left tackle, got on stage with the best in the NFL, which was a big thing for Penn. He was not named to the original Pro Bowl starting unit, but got in the game because Chad Clifton of the Packers had a bigger game to get ready for.

Penn helped hold together a Tampa Bay line decimated by injury this season and was deserving of the spotlight and sunshine.

Barry, tired of 'Cro Cop' criticism, wants to crush Beltran

There's nothing nasty about Pat Barry outside the cage. Inside the Octagon can sometimes be a different story. If he's focused, Barry can be one of the most devastating strikers in the heavyweight division. That's a big if.

Too often, Barry's pleasant disposition follows him into his fights. The stocky kickboxer says there will be no loss of focus this weekend against Joey Beltran at the UFC's Fight for the Troops 2.

"This is a feeling I haven’t had in a long time," Barry told Sherdog. "Back in my kickboxing days, I used to have these every once in a while. Just an angry, want to break something, upset at something. I don’t know what it is. I don’t know what it is that’s giving me this feeling, this sensation, but I’m very annoyed. Like I’m extremely annoyed and I feel like I’ve got to break something."

He wasn't "annoyed" enough back in June during his last fight against Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic and it cost Barry dearly.

Barry spoke often before the UFC 115 fight about what an honor it was to fight his idol. He was so pleasant it even got the normally stoic, business-like Cro Cop to lighten up.

When the fight hit the cage, the gap between the fighters was obvious. Cro Cop is a worn down 36-year-old while Barry, 31, has a lot of fight left in him. The American mauled Cro Cop early in the fight, but starting screwing around and turned things into a sparring session. Cro Cop went into survival mode and submitted a tired Barry. Since the upset loss, the talk of Barry's lack of killer instinct has been incessant.

"I’m still hearing about that, I’m still hearing people," Barry said. "My mother’s hearing this kind of [expletive]. People are approaching my mother and making these comments to her. It’s still going on now."

On the surface, Beltran appears to be a good matchup for Barry. He's a smallish heavyweight who likes to stand and bang, but he can also take a beating and has enough wrestling in his arsenal to pose a major threat to Barry if he doesn't take of business early.

Tip via 5th Round

Vitor Belfort Says Despite Opinions to the Contrary, His Troubled Past Will Not Affect His Fighting Future

(Video courtesy YouTube/SNETCF)

The big question mark whenever Vitor Belfort's doubters talk about how successful the Brazilian powerhouse will be in upcoming bouts like his middleweight championship tilt with Anderson Silva on Saturday night at UFC 126 is where his head's at.

When his sister Priscilla was kidnapped in 2004 in the week prior to his UFC 46 championship bout with Randy Couture, "The Phenom" admitted that the situation was weighing heavily on his mind. Because he spoke openly about the emotional effect loing her had on him, many assume that he never really got over the ordeal even after her kidnappers substantiated fears that Priscilla was dead, confessing in 2007 to her killing.

Subsequently, most of Belfort's detractors chalk his eight MMA losses up to him being mentally fragile, even though they all came against present and future champions and only two were via stoppage. If being beaten by Chuck Liddell, Alistair Overeem, Randy Couture and Dan Henderson in their prime makes you a mental midget then guys like Rich Franklin and Wanderlei Silva must be psychologically retarded as well.

Jones escapes car accident unscathed, will star in 'Unbreakable 2'*

UFC light heavyweight Jon Jones escaped disaster on Wednesday, walking away from a car accident just weeks before his bout with Ryan Bader at UFC 126. He tweeted a picture of his car afterwards, and said that the other driver had to be taken away in a stretcher.

This was a stroke of luck for Jones, because the bout with Bader is key to both men's careers. They have both risen through the ranks of the UFC, seemingly on a collision course. But was it luck? Or is he ... unbreakable?

In a rough and tumble sport like MMA, Jones has suffered very few injuries or cuts. Though he's broken an opponent's face, Jones has never even had a medical suspension for his UFC bouts. That could be because he is young and in excellent condition, or it's because he's the inspiration for the 2000 M.Night Shymalan movie "Unbreakable."

*He's not actually starring in "Unbreakable 2," because I'm pretty sure "Unbreakable" was too terrible of a movie to duplicate.

Fight for the Troops 2 picks, Vegas-style

For a card with plenty of toss-up fights, Ultimate Fight Night 23 has some pretty big numbers on the betting board. Remember the odds are set to balance the public's opinion on the fights. The public is a little shaky on its perception of some these battles. Let's see if we can find some underdog value.

Melvin Guillard (26-8, 9-4 UFC) looks like a new fighter since his move to Albuquerque to work with fight guru Greg Jackson. Jackson has moved Guillard away from his reckless ways of the past. He's a more composed fighter now. Is that enough to steal plus-200? Dunham is aggressive, well-rounded and dangerous from his back. That could be the issue for Guillard, who has fallen victim to submission in all four of his UFC losses.

Matt Mitrione (3-0, 3-0 UFC) enters his fight against big Tim Hague at a UFC career-high 260 pounds. He did look bigger across the shoulders, but does the extra weight mean he's less conditioned? Should Mitrione, with just three pro fights under his belt, be a minus-260 favorite against any experienced MMA heavyweight? This looks shaky. We're not laying that kind of number on a guy who's career wins have come against Kimbo Slice, Marcus Jones and Joey Beltran. There's solid value with Hague.

The same goes for Beltran against Pat Barry. Barry says he more focused for this one, but does he have the intensity and gas tank to finish the fight? Barry is still carrying a little extra weight at 240 up from 233. It makes Beltran worth a play at plus-190.

Yves Edwards is an intriguing favorite. The price is big at minus-270, but Cody McKenzie (12-0, 1-0 UFC) only has one path to victory, the guillotine choke. His wrestling and striking is below par. Edwards (39-16, 7-4 UFC) has suffered some losses over the last 10 years, but only one via submission.

Fight for the Troops 2 betting odds (Courtesy Lagasse Stadium):

'Jacare' Souza keeps belt with win over Lawler at Strikeforce

Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza defended his Strikeforce middleweight championship belt using the world-class jiu-jitsu he is known for, submitting Robbie Lawler with a rear naked choke at Strikeforce in San Jose on Saturday night.

Jacare took Lawler down early in the first round, but when he switched to a guillotine, Lawler was able to get back to his feet. From there, violent stand-up erupted with Lawler throwing big strikes. He used a knee and a combination of punches to knock him to the ground. For some reason, Lawler followed Jacare to the ground, and was controlled on the ground until they were stood up with just 0:25 left in the round. Lawler finished the round strong, throwing strikes until Jacare tried for another takedown.

In the second round, Jacare controlled Lawler on the ground. He punished Lawler with strikes and tried for several submission attempts, but Lawler showed evolution in his fight game, working out of each and every submission attempt with one of MMA's best grapplers.

That submission defense magic disappeared in the third round, as Jacare took Lawler down early. He took his back, slapped on a body triangle and then slipped in a rear naked choke. Lawler tapped at 2:00 in the third.

The difference in this fight was takedown defense. Though Lawler is now training in Arizona with former All-American wrestlers Ryan Bader and C.B. Dollaway, he couldn't stop four of Jacare's six takedown attempts.

Souza is undefeated with Strikeforce after fighting for Dream and Brazilian-based promotions, earning a record of 14-2. Lawler, who just signed a new contract with Strikeforce, is 18-7.

Strikeforce champ "Jacare" Souza ready for anyone, except "Mayhem" Miller

SAN JOSE, Calif. - Strikeforce middleweight champion Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza says he's not one to pick fights when it comes to the next challenge ahead.

But there's one challenge in which he has no interest, and that's a third meeting with Jason "Mayhem" Miller.

Following the first successful defense of his 185-pound crown this past Saturday against Robbie Lawler, Souza scoffed at the prospect of again meeting Miller, who's expected to face the man he beat to win the title, Tim Kennedy.

Steve Spagnuolo Slowly Prepares to Seek Out Rams' Next Quarterbacks Coach

There was some thought when Josh McDaniels was hired by St. Louis as the Rams' offensive coordinator that he would double as the quarterbacks coach.

But now, a week after the hiring, it seems that St. Louis coach Steve Spagnuolo is leaning toward adding a replacement for the retiring quarterbacks coach, Richard Curl. And McDaniels would likely have some input on the hire.

Talking at the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala., to stltoday.com, Spagnuolo said he had not talked to any prospective candidates, but he hinted that he might start doing so in the near future.

"I have some names,'' Spagnuolo said when talking about the open position. "We'll probably start having to bring some people into St. Louis. But we're in no real rush. We want to get the right guy, and I want Josh to feel good about him, too, and the rest of the staff.''

Spagnuolo was due back in St. Louis on Friday and the plan was to sit down with McDaniels to talk about how to go forward.

"I want to get back there and sit down with Josh,'' Spagnuolo said. "We've got to hone in on (the quarterback coach). Josh has done it both ways as a coordinator. Josh has had a quarterback coach, and has not had one. He'll still have a lot to do with the quarterback even if we do have a quarterback coach.''

Warning: Don't Try to Act Tough While Sparring With Wanderlei Silva

(props: burchfootball3)

CagePotato reader Stephen B. writes:

"Not sure who I should send this to, but I thought you would like to see a video from an MMA seminar I went to this past weekend in Charleston, WV. Wandy was in attendance and after demonstrating various techniques, he began sparring with individuals. This was all going pretty well, being that most people understood that he was an animal and respected that at any moment he could destroy their ability to operate their limbs. That is, until a young upstart at the age of 16 chose to show off in front of everyone. It turned out less than favorable for him...Enjoy."

That 16-year-old kid is lucky to be alive after disrespecting Master Silva with his insolent turning side kick. The ensuing bear-slap is pretty epic, and you gotta love how the entire class groans when the kid starts into his Royce Gracie-style heel-chops at the 0:37 mark. I think everyone there learned a valuable lesson at that seminar — when Wanderlei Silva asks you to spar with him, don't. A reverse angle of the video is after the jump.

'Strikeforce: Diaz vs. Cyborg' Aftermath: Oh, Nick Diaz, You So Crazy

(It's a Nor-Cal thing. Or something. VidProps: MMA Fighting)

In successfully defending his welterweight title on Saturday night, Nick Diaz underscored exactly why he is Strikeforce’s most compelling and valuable property. Diaz possesses the total promotional package -- the stand-up, the grappling, the trash talk, the antisocial personality disorder – and at this point it’s clear that Scott Coker needs his blend of credibility, charisma and troubled-foster-kid charm more than almost anyone else on the SF roster. We give him a lot of shit on this website (almost all of which he richly deserves) but after his command performance against Evangelista “Cyborg” Santos in this weekend’s main event, it was impossible not to come away with a greater appreciation for the wonderful train wreck that is Diaz.

From his recent conference call outburst to his shellacking of a game Cyborg to the fact that when the fight was over Diaz couldn’t wait to walk to the side of the cage, flip off some random hecklers in the crowd and call them “fucking bitches,” it was a pleasure to watch him work. There’s just something about this guy: We can’t take our eyes off him and yet as the video at top proves, it would be totally insufferable to actually be around him for longer than five minutes. In that way he’s kind of like a bizarre, badass Milla Jovovich.

Fight for the Troops 2 weigh-in: Mitrione and Hague get to know each other

All the UFC fighters on the Fight for the Troops 2 card are ready to go, but it looked like Matt Mitrione and Tim Hague were ready to thrown down on the stage during the weigh-in Ft. Hood in Killeen, Tx. (video).

After weighing in at a combined 516 pounds, the big boys got nose-to-nose (18:15 mark).

Mitrone, who generally fights around 253, was at a UFC career-high 260 while Hague was slimmer than normal at 256.5.

It was also worth keeping an eye on the condition of the fighters in the other heavyweight bout.

Joey Beltran, a blown up light heavyweight, looked doughy as usual. He's survived fighting at 230 with a little extra meat around his midsection, but his opponent Pat Barry has shown that if he blows up too much it can hurt his cause.

Barry weighed a UFC career-high 248 before his loss at UFC 115 to Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic. He was between 233-237 during his first three UFC fights. Today, he weighed in at a more manageable 240.

The main event fighters, Evan Dunham and Melvin Guillard both arrived on weight as did the remaining 18 fighters.

Mike Guymon and DaMarques Johnson produced one of the goofiest weigh-in staredowns in the history of fighting, as both fighters smiled for the camera (9:10 mark).

Yves Edwards was also in a relaxed mood. He made weight while eating potato chips on the scale and was even nice enough to offer Cody McKenzie a few chips (10:45 mark).

Let's not leave out the Octagon girls. Those camouflage numbers were pretty nice.

Strikeforce burning question: Who the heck is Scott Carson?

Everyone's favorite invincible football-player-turned-Olympian-turned-fighter, Herschel Walker, will take on Scott Carson at Strikeforce: Diaz vs. Cyborg on Saturday. As famous as Herschel Walker is, Carson is unknown.

Walker will turn 49 in March, but will fight in just his second bout. Carson isn't much more experienced, despite starting his career in 1999. He won his first four fights over a three-year period, ending with a submission over Bryson Haubrink at the very first WEC event.

Carson then took a nine-year hiatus from MMA, returning in June of 2010 to fight Lorenz Larkin at Pandemonium at the Palladium. Carson was knocked out in the first round.

He's looking at the bout with Walker as an opportunity to show what he capable of.

"I feel fortunate to get this fight and I hope to make the best of it. I’m definitely prepared and ready for a fight," Carson said at Thursday's pre-fight press conference. "Fighting such a legendary name has certainly added a lot of hype to the fight, but I have worked very hard in training camp. I’m looking to see this fight go into the later rounds where it will be a war of attrition.’"

N.Y. Post video report: 'How can you regulate it so that there isn't serious injuries?'

The UFC's big press conference at Madison Square Garden unveiled a nice show of support. Scott O'Neil, President of Madison Square Garden Sports, is squarely behind the effort as was N.Y. assemblyman Dean Murray. There was little opposition in the room. As a result, no debate ensued.

There was one interesting moment when Megan Paznik asked this:

"If you're adding kicking and punching to mixed martial arts, how can you regulate it so that there isn't serious injuries?"

Dana White was so thrown off he had a tough time answering the question. He turned to referencing the fact that there hasn't been a death in the history of the UFC. The easiest approach would've been to mention that boxing, football and hockey are all contact sports to a certain degree and there really is no way to guarantee a sport is free of injuries. It's also worth noting that elements of MMA like Judo, karate, boxing, jiu-jitsu and wrestling are all legal in New York. Why would a combination of those disciplines be illegal?

Paznik went on to voice this video. Yes, there is a dogfighting comparison and the producer of the video made sure to include plenty of violent looking images.

Herschel Walker wins second pro fight via TKO

Herschel Walker continues to defy Father Time. The 48-year-old former NFL and college football star toyed with Scott Carson to pick up his second career mixed martial arts win on the Strikeforce card in San Jose, Calif.

Walker knocked Carson down with a left hook in the opening minute of their fight at the HP Pavilion and brutalized him on the ground for the next two minutes. Referee Dan Stell stepped in to save Carson at 3:13 of the first round. Walker is now 2-0 and said he plans on moving forward with his MMA career.

"MMA is my love," Walker said, when asked about talk of an NFL return.

Walker has been successful in every athletic endeavor he's attempted, so he's very demanding of himself in MMA.

"I was okay. I took a kick where I thought I was getting a little too excited," Walker said. "When you're in MMA, you should be able to take a kick like that."

Walker was a bull from the get-go.

"(My trainer) Javier Mendes told me I have to be on offense. Being a young MMA fighter I gotta control what I'm doing in the cage," said Walker.

The scenario surrounding the first knockdown was like scene out of a movie. Carson grazed Walker's face. The former football star appeared enraged and yelled in the air. He walked straight forward and floored Carson with a left. Carson got to his feet momentarily with 3:50 left in the round, but Walker lifted him in the air and tossed him back down. Walker dominated him on the ground working from hip control and landing punches under Carson's arms. The Californian did little to protect himself.

With two minutes left in the first, Walker backed off for a second to allow Carson to get back to his feet. Carson barely got to his feet, was drilled by a left hook and crumbled against the fence. The referee had to stop it.

For man his age, Walker's energy level was incredible. He threw 58 shots and landed 40 overall. On the ground, he was 36-of-53 (67.9 percent). Walker's combination of stamina and athleticism simply broke Carson's will.

Walker began his MMA journey in 2009 when he began training at a renowned MMA gym, the American Kickboxing Academy in San Jose. That's also the home of UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez and UFC welterweight title contenders Jon Fitch and Josh Koscheck.

Walker made his MMA debut last January. He showed off decent striking and grappling, with his gas tank being his most impressive element. Walker manhandled 26-year-old Greg Nagy for his first professional victory.

Walker's MMA exploits add to an unbelievable athletic resume. After a decorated career at Georgia, Walker earned a home in the college football Hall of Fame. He won the 1982 Heisman trophy as a junior. Walker went on to play 15 seasons in the USFL and NFL, where he rushed for 13,787 yards.

In the middle of his NFL career, he decided that he wanted to be an Olympian and took on the challenge of the bobsled. Walker made the U.S. Olympic team in the two-man bobsled and finished seventh at the 1992 games.

Kirk Ferentz statement on Iowa players

Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz released a statement on Friday afternoon that announced that five of the 13 football players hospitalized with rhabdomyolysis will be released by the end of the night.

Here's the full text of Ferentz's statement, his first public comments since 12 of the 13 players were admitted to the hospital Monday night.
“I am pleased to learn that five of the 13 members of the UI football team are being discharged from UI Hospitals and Clinics throughout this afternoon and evening. I am very happy for these student-athletes and their families, and look forward to the release of the remaining student-athletes in the days ahead. Our entire staff shares the concern expressed by University of Iowa President Sally Mason and president David Miles of the Iowa Board of Regents and the State of Iowa, for the well-being and continued recovery of every student-athlete treated at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.
“I have been communicating with each student-athlete and their parents, or guardians, since learning they were admitted into the hospital. Members of the football staff have also been communicating daily with this group. This communication will continue until each student-athlete is able to resume their academic and athletic commitments.
"As the parent of both a current and former member of the team, the health and well-being of each student-athlete in our football program is paramount. I will work with all of the individuals and groups that contribute to the welfare of our student-athletes to understand what led to this occurrence in order to make certain it does not happen again."

So there you have it.

Ferentz points out he and his assistants have been in constant communication with the parents of the hospitalized players since Monday, although some clearly wanted him to be physical present earlier than he was. He also echoes the sentiments of Mason and Miles to get to the bottom of what happened.

It's very good news to hear about the five players being released. Hopefully, the eight others will be discharged soon.

Readers take on UCF in mailbag

Welcome to another Friday mailbag. I got lots of comments on the UCF story I wrote earlier this week, so I wanted to start off with a sampling of your opinions before I answered a few questions. Thanks to all who write in, and keep those comments coming.

Scott Costin in Orlando writes: Good report on UCF athletics. All that's missing for this program is exposure. Hopefully an AQ conference is in the near future for UCF.

Brian in Tampa writes: How can you write those articles on UCF without mentioning USF's success in catching up with FSU and Miami programs? UCF is trying to do what USF has done. Don't make it seem like it's still the 90's with the BIG 3. It's the BIG 4 now. UF, FSU, Miami, and USF.

Gene Barra writes: UCF football might be on the rise, but they had no business being ranked in the Top 25. Not one of their victories this year came against a team that ended the season with a winning record. Their three losses this year - well, those would be against the three teams they played that ended the season with a winning record! Anyone that voted them in should be paying more attention before they cast their vote.

John Bream writes: I'm not sure what makes you think UCF is so elite or what the impetus for your article was. UCF is far from elite. They are 3-48 (or close to it, I know the 3 wins is right) against the BCS in football. They are 2-8 all-time against ECU in football. Not to mention, they are currently a bottom feeder in C-USA basketball. Their baseball program is non-existent. Their "state of the art" athletic complex doesn't even sit 40,000 people in football. They cannot even fill their stadium for big games. They do not play any hard out of conference games, and the ones they do, they never win. They have one all-time bowl win in football. They have one all-time top 25 finish in football. They have no history, no tradition, and no fan support in their home city. Now, please, tell me what is so elite about UCF?

Andrea Adelson: I actually did not expect as much outrage as this article received, both in the mailbag, my inbox and the comments section of the story. I addressed this as well in my live chat yesterday. The reason for writing the story was simple -- UCF had its two marquee teams ranked in the Top 25 for the first time in school history, and the program has been discussed as potentially getting a Big East invite. So it made sense to help explain the roots of this program and where it may or may not be headed. UCF is not elite right now. UCF does not have the fan support it needs right now. The article does not present the facts in that regard, either. It simply was meant to serve as a brief history of the program and the potential ahead. As for Brian, USF already got its Big East bid, so does it need to be said the Bulls are a step ahead? Yes they have wins against FSU and Miami in the past two years, but I don't think people in this state consider USF a part of a Big 4. Gene, you are forgetting SMU. John one correction – the football stadium seats over 45,000 with plans to increase capacity to 56,000.

Arlen in Pocatello, Idaho, writes: I am OK with the BCS not giving the MWC champion an automatic bid every year because they want good competition in these bowls (excluding UConn 2010). So why don't they put a clause in the rules that says if the MWC champion is ranked in the top 8 or 10, then they will receive an automatic invite? This gives the conference something to look forward to, and then there will be no "snubbing" complaints by the MWC, and if they aren't good enough, then the BCS doesn't have to take them. This is, of course, separate from the non-AQ clause already in place. What do you think?

Adelson writes: You are right, there already is a clause in there that states a non-AQ that finishes in the Top 12 gets an automatic berth, so I am not sure what the additional clause does for the Mountain West, except in cases where there is another non-AQ school that is fighting for a BCS spot as well. I think it would serve the BCS well to add in a clause that states any conference champion must, oh I don't know, be RANKED in the BCS standings to get into a game to avoid another UConn scenario.

Matthieu Duquette in Boise writes: Everyone is in a quandary over the receiver core of Boise State now that (Austin) Pettis and (Titus) Young are gone. But I would submit these couple of points. First Kirby Moore will be back with one active year already under his belt averaging 11.5 yards per attempt over 21 receptions. Secondly, Boise under Kellen Moore, until this past year, wasn't regarded as a deep pass offense. The experience last year obviously allowed them to blossom for a year in the deep game. But I would say that the new faces will still be effective as they undoubtedly return to a system more like that of the first two Kellen years. Third, (Tyler) Shoemaker will be a huge factor now that the deep game will become more conservative. He was great last year and BSU will no doubt rely on his experience even more this year. Last, Kellen Moore’s accuracy is going to make up much of the lack of experience in the new receivers. That's how I see it. What are your thoughts?

Adelson writes: You present some very logical arguments, Matthieu. I think Shoemaker is going to be in line for a breakout year, and there is obviously some really good young talent on the team, Kirby Moore included. That being said, it is difficult to replace the experience and the rhythm Moore had with Young and Pettis, simply because they were his go-to guys for so long. I don’t think losing them is a backbreaker, though, because Boise State will still be a Top 10 team when the preseason polls come out. I just think it might take some time to get his new receivers going. It’s a valid question to have whenever you have young talent coming in.

Bears fans thank Bas Rutten for his calm, cool head

Football fans know that on Sunday, the Bears will play the Packers for a shot at the Super Bowl. It's kind of a big deal here in Chicago (you can read all my Bears-related blogging here, and all of Yahoo! Sports' awesome NFL coverage here), but the Bears might not have reached the NFC Championship game without Pro Bowl linebacker Brian Urlacher. It turns out that Brian Urlacher might not be where he is without the kindness of MMA legend Bas Rutten.

So on behalf of all Bears fans, thank you, Bas, and thank you to the bouncers who stepped in and prevented Urlacher from getting the liver shot that Bas would have definitely delivered.

Thanks to Chicago's MMA.

Titan Fighting 16 headliner Abe Wagner sees all upside in bout with Tim Sylvia

Abe Wagner is supposed to lose Friday at Titan Fighting Championship 16.

He has less than a third of the fights his opponent does, and he hasn't even remotely faced the level of competition.

But that opponent, former UFC heavyweight champion Tim Sylvia, is looking squarely at a trip back to the big leagues. Could that be a recipe for an upset? Wagner, a veteran of "The Ultimate Fighter 10," thinks so.

Champ Bailey Sets Cornerbacks' Record by Being Named to 10th Pro Bowl

Denver Broncos cornerback Champ Bailey had a Pro Bowl-caliber season. Now he has the Pro Bowl berth to go with it.

Bailey was notified Thursday that he would be the replacement for Raiders cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha on the AFC Pro Bowl roster. Asomugha had to withdraw because of medical reasons.

The selection to the Pro Bowl was Bailey's 10th in a 12-year career, the most in NFL history at the cornerback position. He broke a tie with pro football Hall of Famer Michael Haynes, who had nine.

"I'm very excited to represent the AFC and the Broncos at the Pro Bowl," Bailey said in a statement released by the team. "It's a great honor to play on the same field with the NFL's best."
