A nasty flu bug has worked its way through the Chicago Blackhawks' dressing room in recent days and Patrick Kane fell victim to it early this week, causing him to miss two practices.
But after photos of Kane allegedly drinking Sunday night surfaced on Deadspin.com accompanied by an article that suggested Kane was absent from practice on Monday and Tuesday because the winger was hungover, the 22-year-old responded by saying, "You get two days off and you're sick and people are going to make up things.
"I don't know where the pictures came from, if they're from the summer or what," Kane said after scoring a goal and adding two assists during the Hawks' 4-3 loss to the Columbus on Friday night at the United Center. "I guess that's the kind of reputation I have around here where you're sick for two days and people think you're doing that stuff."
Kane said a friend texted him to tell him about the photos and "when you see that, your heart kind of drops. Especially when you're sick. I think that Web site makes up a lot of stuff."
Kane has had well-documented reputation-damaging incidents in the past, including when he was arrested Aug. 9, 2009 after a run-in with a Buffalo cab driver that eventually led Kane to plead guilty to a misdemeanor charge of disorderly conduct.
In January of 2010, Kane -- along with several other Hawks teammates at the time -- was photographed shirtless and accompanied by several women in a limousine in Vancouver.
"I don't know if that's the reputation I have and people think I get two days off and that kind of stuff happens," Kane said. "I'm here to play hockey. That's what I love doing, especially at this time of year. I'm focused in on what this team needs to do and what I have to do. That's all I'll say about that."
