Lions' Hill misses practice; Bears may get Stanton

Tribune News Services

ALLEN PARK, Mich. -- The Bears' run of good fortune on the injury front apparently could continue Sunday against the Lions.

Quarterback Shaun Hill appeared to have a splint on the index finger of his throwing hand at practice Tuesday. He stood off to the side while Drew Stanton and Zac Robinson took snaps.

Coach Jim Schwartz, who is always secretive about injuries, was even more so when asked about his quarterback situation afterward. He said he wouldn't comment because he didn't want to tip his hand to the Bears.

"With the Bears not practicing today ... no sense giving them the jump on anything," Schwartz said.
The Lions (2-9) already lost quarterback Matthew Stafford to an injured shoulder, and Hill has been starting in his place. Stafford was at practice but wasn't participating in the portion open to the media.

Hill played the entire game against New England last Thursday, throwing for 285 yards in a 45-24 loss. None of the quarterbacks were in the locker room Tuesday when it was open to reporters.

Stanton has played in three games this season, completing 20 of 36 passes for 233 yards with a touchdown and an interception. He came on in relief of Hill against the New York Giants on Oct. 17 and replaced an injured Stafford late in an overtime loss to the Jets on Nov. 7.

Stafford hasn't played since hurting his throwing shoulder for the second time this season in that game. He was also injured in the opener at Chicago, forcing Hill to start the next five games. Hill broke his non-throwing arm against the Giants, but Stafford was healthy enough to come back and lead his team to a win over Washington in the next game.

But that's been the only full game this season for the No. 1 pick in the 2009 draft. Stafford hurt himself again while playing the Jets the following weekend, and the Lions went on to lose in overtime.

Detroit picked up Robinson after Stafford's second injury.

Stafford did say he was hoping to take a step forward this week.

"Hopefully I might try and do a little bit of light throwing this week and see how it feels," Stafford said Monday during a weekly appearance on WJR radio.

Schwartz indicated that might happen in the near future.

"He's probably pretty close to that" Schwartz said. "He's doing really well in his rehab."

Schwartz cautioned that the team has to evaluate Stafford each day instead of putting him on a set schedule.

"Just because he throws on one day, doesn't mean we plan on him throwing the next day," Schwartz said.

Schwartz also didn't provide an update on kicker Jason Hanson, who has been out since hurting the knee on his kicking leg against the Jets.

The Bears (8-3) have been playing at full strength while recent opponents such as the Eagles (cornerback Asante Samuel) and Dolphins (quarterbacks Chad Henne and Chad Pennington) have been saddled with key injuries.

UFC 123 shocker: Penn sends Hughes home in 21 seconds

B.J. Penn is far from finished. Lightweight legend disappeared from pound-for-pound top 10 lists after dropping two fights to current UFC lightweight champ Frankie Edgar. Looks like Edgar is just that good and a terrible matchup for Penn. Against a slower, less dangerous striker in Matt Hughes, Penn looked like a world beater.

Hughes came out looking to strike and got drilled by a counter right. The former welterweight champ fell to his back where he took four blasting rights and a left. Referee Dan Miragliotta stepped in to save Hughes at 0:21 of the first round in the co-main event of UFC 123.

UPDATE: Penn received an $80,000 bonus for knockout of the night.

UPDATE II: Heavy.com reports that Penn will bounce back quickly to fight on Feb. 27 in the main event at UFC 127 in Sydney, Australia.

Seconds after the TKO, a confused Hughes asked his cornermen, "what happened?"

After a few minutes to collect himself, Hughes told UFC analyst Joe Rogan, he didn't know what hit him.

"He hit me hard. When I felt the hit, I thought it was a knee or a kick," Hughes said. "He hit me pretty hard."

Hughes (45-7, 18-6 UFC) has only been stopped via TKO three times in his career. This was by far the fastest knockout he's ever suffered. Hard to believe, but Hughes lost via submission against Dennis Hallman twice, in just 18 and 20 seconds.

Penn, who seemed almost sullen leading up the fight, got his mojo back. He exploded with joy after the fight running from the cage into the crowd. Once he got the microphone, he screamed that he loved Detroit and the UFC. He also told Hughes that he was his idol.

Penn (16-7-1, 13-6-1 UFC) was a dominant force at 155 pounds winning three straight title defenses after grabbing the belt at UFC 80. He was dominated by Georges St. Pierre in a fight at 170 pounds at UFC 94.

After losing to Edgar for a second time, the move back to face the big boys at welterweight seemed like an odd choice. Penn was probably giving away 10-12 pounds tonight, but superior technique and speed usually overcomes size.

After a loss to Thiago Alves back at UFC 85, Hughes seemed incapable of competing at the highest level. With three straight wins, he got his career back on track and was even being mentioned as a title contender.

Following the fight, the 37-year-old veteran said he was unclear of what he would do next.

Tom Brady's War on Baldness Should Commence Immediately

Tom BradyMore than 50 Facebook groups are allied against Tom Brady's hair. Even Justin Bieber mocked the haircut Brady 'do.

Virtually every man who isn't attempting to join an emo rock band has watched Tom Brady flick back his hair like Phoebe Cates climbing out of the pool in "Fast Times at Ridgemont High," and doubled over with laughter. Did anyone else find it impossible to keep a straight face when a fired-up Brady went after his linemen on the sideline, hair whipping around his face like a fan was turned on him during the shooting of a romantic comedy?

How did they keep straight faces? Instead of flipping out when he was asked why he was laughing on the sideline Monday night, Derek Anderson should have just said, "We were laughing at Tom Brady's hair."

Everyone would have understood. Even people with soul patches think Tom Brady's hair looks ridiculous. So, it comes as no surprise that the true culprit of Brady's long hair has finally filtered out, he's balding.

Balding!
The Other Side

The thing about the current mop-top is it's naturalness. If God gave you hair, let it flow. If his grand plan includes male-pattern baldness, let that flow too...
-- David Whitley on why Tom Brady should not turn to hair transplants

And, of course, Brady's supermodel girlfriend is unhappy with this. Men across America can rejoice. Gisele Bundchen married a three-time Super Bowl quarterback who has been called the sexiest man alive and she's not content with his physical appearance. What's worse, Brady is so insecure about his balding pate that he's listening to her. So she's sent him to hair-specialist doctors to examine his baldness. In the meantime, Brady has gone Justin Bieber on us to try and deal with the shame of his diminishing hair. Somewhere, Tony Kornheiser is considering hair extensions. And weeping. The bald brotherhood could have had an addition.

Strikeforce: Henderson vs. Sobral is not quite as expected

Just a week ago, Strikeforce: Henderson vs. Sobral was set with Alistair Overeem's brother's Strikeforce debut against Antonio Silva, Herschel Walker's second MMA fight, and a showcase for local favorite Jesse Finney.

Scrap that. Now, the card has a completely different look. Valentijn Overeem, Walker and Finney have all been scratched from the card because of injury.

Now, Mike Kyle has stepped in to face Silva, so one fight is salvaged, but the card has a vastly different look than it did just one week ago.

Hallman quickly TKOs Parisyan to end the UFC 123 undercard

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. -- Dennis Hallman made quick work of Karo Parisyan to finish off the undercard at UFC 123 on Saturday. Hallman knocked Parisyan down with a left and then a right, then finished with six unanswered punches. The fight was called at 1:47 of the first round.

This was Parisyan's first bout back since leaving the UFC on bad terms last year. He was welcomed back but didn't give a particularly inspiring performance. MMA veteran Hallman improved his record to 66-13-2. Parisyan's is now 26-6.

UFC 122 sub of the night: Siver thrills German fans

Dennis Siver is built like a mini-Mike Tyson so it should surprise no one, that he likes to stand and bang. Andre Winner also likes a good scrap. So when the duo decided to square off in the middle of the cage and flail away, there was no way the match was going to decision. Siver ate some great punches from Winner. When he landed his own big counter left, Winner hit the floor. Siver jumped on top, unleashed a nasty set of punches and took the back of the stunned Brit. Siver pulled off a nifty choke submission at 3:37 of the first round.

Siver - a Russian, who moved to Mannheim, Germany when he was 17 - sent the 8,204 in Oberhausen into a frenzy. The spectacular stoppage from Siver (17-7, 6-4 UFC) got him the submission of the night bonus good for $60,000. He's also earned himself a step up in competition his next time. Don't be surprised if Siver is a regular on the televised portion of several cards in 2011. He's an action fighter, who can potentially produce highlight reel finishes each time out.

It might surprise some to hear that this was Siver's 10th fight in the UFC. He's been a hidden gem mostly fighting on the non-televised portion of the UFC's European cards in 2008 and 2009. With this win and the upset of UFC veteran Spencer Fisher back in June, he's now posted a big close to 2010.

Winner, the runner-up in the lightweight class on Season 9 of "The Ultimate Fighter," is at a crossroads. His hand speed is awesome but he just hasn't been able to get on a roll and establish himself as a player at 155 pounds. After two straight losses, Winner is now just 2-3 with the promotion.

Parisyan always thought White would let him fight again

Karo Parisyan has had a lot of low points over the years, but he was at rock bottom the Friday before UFC 106. Because of struggles with an anxiety disorder and injuries, the veteran fighter had to drop out of his bout against Dustin Hazelett. Dana White lost his cool, going ballistic on Twitter.

Karo Parisyan has [expletive] over the UFC, the fans and his opponent again!!! He will not be fighting saturday or ever again in the UFC!!

Parisyan has worked way back into the good graces of the promotion and the UFC president. He returns to the Octagon this weekend at UFC 123 against Dennis Hallman.

The Armenian had been fighting for White since 2003, so he never lost hope.

"I never thought the door was closed," Parisyan told The Canadian Press. "I knew that I would fight again, I just knew it. I know Dana White. I know how he thinks, I know how he works. And when somebody says something like that, I know that in the heat of the moment he got pissed and he just said that. I knew I would eventually make my way back to the UFC because I didn't kill nobody."

In addition to bailing from a fight at UFC 88 because of his mental struggles, he was also fined $32,000 and suspended for nine months by the Nevada State Athletic Commission after a positive test for pain killers at UFC 94.

"Anxiety led to that going even more crazy," Parisyan said. "It was just whole combination of things, man. I've never been 100 per cent walking in the cage. The best I've been was maybe 70 per cent and I wasn't even 10 per cent for that (UFC 88) fight."

Optimism was about all Parisyan had after what were two difficult years. He was also confident that he could talk White into giving him another shot.

"Dana's got a heart, man. He has a heart. And he does care about his fighters. He does care about people," Parisyan said. "Sure, if you need money, you talk to him, you tell him. Dana never says no that much, unless it's something outrageous. He'll work with you."

Now the pressure is really on for Parisyan. He’s only fought once in 22 months and the NSAC fine buried him in debt. At least this is a start. It’d be nice to see Parisyan reach his potential. This was a guy who was on the verge of a UFC welterweight title shot back in 2005. His career is now a fight-by-fight proposition.

TCU leaving Mountain West to join Big East

Tribune News Services

TCU is moving to the Big East Conference, where the Horned Frogs would be BCS busters no more.

TCU's board of trustees unanimously approved an invitation Monday to join the Big East in football and all other sports. The move from the Mountain West Conference becomes official July 1, 2012.

The Big East Conference will provide TCU automatic access to the Bowl Championship Series and its five big-money games. That league, currently with eight football teams, has one of six automatic BCS slots.
"Having BCS automatic-qualifying status was a priority for our football program and a great reward for the success we've had the last decade," TCU athletic director Chris Del Conte said in a statement.

The third-ranked Horned Frogs (12-0) wrapped up their second consecutive undefeated regular season and Mountain West title with a 66-17 victory at New Mexico on Saturday.

TCU is third in the BCS standings, the highest for a non-automatic qualifying team, and in line for a chance to play for the national championship if Auburn or Oregon lose next weekend. The Frogs likely will play in the Rose Bowl if Auburn and Oregon both win -- players were holding roses on the field after their win Saturday.

The only current Big East team ranked in the AP poll is No. 23 West Virginia (8-3, 4-2 Big East), which is 24th in the BCS standings. Connecticut (7-4, 4-2) could get the league's automatic BCS spot.

But TCU might not have been headed to a BCS game without Boise State's loss Friday night in overtime at Nevada. Had the Broncos remained undefeated, there was a real possibility that the Broncos could have passed the Frogs in the BCS standings and been the only non-AQ team to get into one of the top-level bowls.

TCU was a BCS buster for the first time last season, then lost to Boise State in the Fiesta Bowl.

The Frogs have won 25 consecutive regular-season games, and 38 of 41 overall. The only losses in that span were in the Fiesta Bowl, and games at Oklahoma and Utah.

With all TCU sports moving to the Big East, it will create a 17-team basketball league.

The pending departure of TCU continues a big shuffle for the Mountain West, which next season is losing Utah to the expanded Pac-12 and BYU, which is going independent in football. Boise State, Fresno State and Nevada are moving from the WAC to the Mountain West.

The Big East will be the fourth conference for TCU since the Southwest Conference broke apart after the 1995 season and the Frogs weren't among the Texas schools that became part of the Big 12.

TCU was in the WAC from 1996-2000 before going to Conference USA for four seasons and then joining the Mountain West in 2005.

When Nebraska announced it was leaving the Big 12 for the Big 10 and Colorado declared its move to the Pac-10, the Big 12 opted against adding TCU or anybody else and plans to move forward as a 10-team league for now.

Man Dies After 20-Foot Fall From Ledge at Soldier Field

Filed under:

UPDATE: The man has been identified as Stewart Haverty.

CHICAGO (AP) -- Authorities say a man has died after falling at least 20 feet from a ledge at Soldier Field while attending a Chicago Bears game.

Chicago police say the man fell around 4:55 p.m. Sunday during the matchup between the Bears and the Philadelphia Eagles. He was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

Chicago Fire Chief Joe Roccasalva says the man landed on a small rooftop on the outside of the stadium. Witnesses told authorities the man ran to a ledge and jumped. Roccasalva says the man was in his 20s, but his name hasn't been released.

It's the second death in a week at a major sporting arena. On Nov. 21, a 2-year-old boy fell from a luxury box at the Staples Center during a Los Angeles Lakers game.

Ravens, Bucs Butt Heads, Then Set Sights on Critical Week 13 Matchups

Todd HeapBALTIMORE -- Sunday's slugfest at M&T Bank Stadium featured a heavyweight, the Baltimore Ravens, against an up-and-coming bunch, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who aspire to NFL elitism.

The Ravens won 17-10, but left the game knowing they'd been in a physical and chippy affair that served as a suitable warm-up for a much bigger bash next week.

"Just another Sunday in the National Football League," Baltimore wideout Derrick Mason said.

Not exactly.

Faber debuts with a bang at bantamweight, puts Mizugaki to sleep

There were no stamina or motivational issues tonight for Urijah Faber. In his first fight down at 135 pounds, Urijah Faber sent a nasty message to the rest of the division. He seized an opening, jumped on Takeyu Mizugaki's back and put him to sleep. The Japanese fighter refused to tap to a rear-naked choke and was left in a zombie-like state by the time referee Josh Rosenthal waved off the fight. Faber wins the main event in Las Vegas at the 4:50 mark of the first round at WEC 52.

Following the quick win, Faber (23-4, 9-3 WEC) was fired up. He sent a clear message to the current champ Dominick Cruz.

"I wanted to finish. I'm a finisher, I think that's what this division needs," Faber told Versus' Craig Hummer.

Update: Faber won submission of the night and a $10,000 bonus.

Update II: Faber told the media that he's going to split his bonus money with teammate Joe Benavidez, who also scored a submission finish in his victory over Waggney Fabiano

Cruz, the WEC bantamweight champ has a seven-fight win streak, but five of those victories have come by decision. Who handed the 25-year-old his only loss? Faber did back in 2007 at 145 pounds. Cruz will defend the WEC belt one more time in December against Scott Jorgensen. If he does so successfully, it would be a natural for Faber and Cruz to meet in the first UFC bantamweight title fight sometime in 2011.

"We're going to the UFC after this. It's been an awesome run with the WEC," Faber said. "It's time to step it up and get my belt in the UFC."

Faber was the biggest star in the WEC for years. Sporting a three-year unbeaten from 2005-2008, he carried the promotion. Then fighters got a little bigger at 145 pounds and Faber found it difficult to compete. At 5-foot-6, he's a natural down at 135.

"I've been in title contention for like six years now. When I first started fighting there was no 135-pound weight class. So it's not like I had the choice. I was just the best guy at 145," Faber said. "So now it's my time to shine down here. I'm at my most competitive weight. It's my time. It's a new era baby!"

This was an impressive win considering the caliber of competition. Mizugaki (13-5-2, 2-3 WEC) has faced the best of the best in the WEC, that includes going the distance with former 135 champ Miguel Torres. He's a tough cookie and wasn't about to tap.

"The Japanese have that fighting spirit," Faber said. "This guy is known as a guy who goes to the very end. I knew I'd have to do something drastic and put him out and I did."

Eagles vs. Bears: Jay Cutler Torches Philly in Finest Chicago Outing

Lance Briggs, Julius PeppersHeading into Sunday's game between the 7-3 Philadelphia Eagles and the 7-3 Chicago Bears, most people viewed the Eagles as Super Bowl contenders and the Bears as mere playoff pretenders. But the Bears' tremendous effort on Sunday in Chicago showed that they're major players in the NFC playoff race, topping Philadelphia 31-26 for their eighth win.

Bears quarterback Jay Cutler threw four touchdown passes on his first nine completions, having his best game yet in Chicago. Eagles quarterback Michael Vick had a decent game, but he didn't play at the MVP level he had been at for most of this season. And the Eagles defense clearly missed injured cornerback Asante Samuel, who leads Philadelphia in interceptions.

A few thoughts on the game:

o. The Bears' defensive line was ready for Michael Vick from the beginning, sacking him on the third play from scrimmage and forcing a three-and-out.

o. Vick is having the best passing season of his NFL career, but he still sometimes looks like he doesn't know the strength of his own rocket arm. He overthrew a wide-open Brent Celek in the first quarter, missing what probably would have been a touchdown pass, and the Eagles had to settle for a David Akers field goal to give them a 3-0 lead.

Victor Valimaki started his MMA career 3-3, then he went on hiatus.

He had been one of the first in the Edmonton, Alberta area to take MMA training seriously after he met a martial-arts instructor on a military base, and he entered his career quickly when a promoter put on the first-ever MMA show in the city.

After a subsequent 0-2 stint with the UFC, Valimaki recently has been on a nice run. Now, he hopes a win at The Fight Club's Dec. 10 show will get him back to the UFC or another major promotion.

Ex-Patriots land in another video mess

The Denver Broncos and head coach Josh McDaniels were fined $100,000 combined for violating the NFL's policy on improperly videotaping an opponent.

Broncos video operation director Steve Scarnecchia filmed a San Francisco 49ers walkthrough before their Week 8 game in London. McDaniels claimed he refused to watch the tape, but he and the Broncos were punished for failing to disclose the violation. The Broncos fired Scarnecchia.

The New England Patriots weren't directly involved in this particular case. But the incident picks at the most noticeable wart on the Patriots' recent legacy.

I've repeatedly dismissed the impact the Patriots' video violations had on their dominance, but that's not going to stop the renewed criticisms from a scandal that engulfed them in 2007 and 2008.

You need only read the comment sections on this blog to see how much rival fans love to play the cheater card. The fact that McDaniels and Scarnecchia cut their NFL teeth under Patriots head coach Bill Belichick won't go unnoticed.

The NFL stripped the Patriots of their 2008 first-round draft pick, fined Belichick $500,000 and fined the team $250,000 for illicitly videotaping defensive hand signals.

At the time, McDaniels was the Patriots' offensive coordinator.

Scarnecchia, the only son of Patriots offensive line coach Dante Scarnecchia, was on the Patriots' staff from 2001 through 2004, when some of the violations were committed. But Steve Scarnecchia had moved to the New York Jets with Eric Mangini when the NFL handed down its sanctions.

MMA Top 10 Light Heavyweights: Who's No. 2?

by Michael David SmithWhen you're trying to rank MMA fighters, it's easy to say you'll just rank them based on who they've beaten and who they've lost to inside the cage. It's a lot harder to actually create the rankings when you realize that it's mathematically impossible to rank every fighter ahead of the guys he's beaten and behind the guys who have beaten him.

That's the challenge of picking the No. 2 light heavyweight in the world right now. UFC light heavyweight champion Shogun Rua is No. 1, but there are three candidates for No. 2: Rampage Jackson, Lyoto Machida and Rashad Evans. And there's simply no way to rank those three without putting one of them behind someone he's beaten, and another one ahead of a man who has beaten him. Machida beat Evans, Evans beat Rampage, and Rampage beat Machida. Any way you slice it, someone has to get ranked ahead of someone who beat him in the cage.

So who's No. 2? I make my choice below.

'Rampage' (finally) suffers a definitive loss

There will never be answer to who really won last night's main event at UFC 123. Some favor Quinton "Rampage" Jackson while others liked the Octagon control exhibited by Lyoto Machida. Jackson took a split decision win from the Brazilian. He stated several times that he was lucky to win and even said Machida deserved a rematch.

The good feelings continued until Rampage arrived back home in Los Angeles. That's when he decided to take on his manager Anthony McGann. Jackson got nailed playing bag tag and went for a ride.

-- MMA Warehouse has a wide variety of markdowns, on everything from the Tri-Coasta Korean Zombie shirt to the Georges St. Pierre garbage can. You can even get some fighter dolls for less than $10.

-- Six Deuce will take 25% off every order over $30, and free shipping to the U.S. and Canada for any order over $50. May we suggest the "Glorious Sweater of Absolute Victory" sweatshirt, patterned after Fedor Emelianenko's famous sweater?

-- MMA Stop has a coupon for free domestic shipping. Use it to buy the sweatshirt your brother dropped a not-so-subtle hint about.

UFC 123 Results: Mark Munoz Beats Aaron Simpson

by Michael David SmithIn a battle of two excellent collegiate wrestlers that was fought mostly on the feet, Mark Munoz beat Aaron Simpson by unanimous decision at UFC 123.

"I was prepared to go three rounds and go as hard as I can," Munoz said afterward. "I know Aaron doesn't back down, and I didn't back down for three rounds."

As is so often the case when two wrestlers step into the Octagon, they ended up spending most of the time on their feet in the first round, feeling each other out in the stand up, trading punches, and stalemating more than anything else when they clinched. Simpson probably did a little more than Munoz and deserved to win the first.

Joe Lauzon's banner can 'ear' you just fine

DETROIT -- Don't accuse Joe Lauzon of not having a sense of humor. The fighter, who is taking on George Sotiropoulos at UFC 123 at the Palace of Auburn Hills on Saturday, included a not-so-subtle tribute to his well known ears on his sponsor banner.

Tom Brady: Patriots just getting warmed up

Opponents that hoped to jump on the New England Patriots -- with their inexperienced defenders and dubious pass rush and holdout Pro Bowl guard and injured slot receiver and controversial wideout -- obviously have missed their opportunity.

The Patriots entered 2010 with all sorts of question marks and then created more in the early weeks, trading Randy Moss and failing to get Logan Mankins back until three games ago.

But the Patriots endured and take a sparkling 8-2 record into their Thanksgiving game against the destitute Detroit Lions.

The Patriots already are considered among the elite, and their leader is confident they're going to get significantly better.

"Football season hasn't even started yet," Brady told reporters Tuesday. "I keep telling you guys. We aren't even half the team that hopefully we're going to be at some point here in the next five, six weeks."

That's a scary thought.

Aside from that hiccup in Cleveland, the Patriots do appear to get stronger by the game.

Mankins is back. The offense has learned it can rely upon rookie tight ends Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez. The backfield tandem of BenJarvus Green-Ellis and Danny Woodhead has congealed. Wes Welker's rebuilt knee feels better every week.

On defense, rookies have evolved at key positions, including left cornerback Devin McCourty.

With the New York Jets refusing to lose, the AFC East homestretch should be electrifying.

Why so serious? Bills' Johnson fined for T-shirt

Tribune News Services

Steve Johnson found out how serious the NFL is about enforcing its rules against over-the-top touchdown celebrations.

The Buffalo Bills receiver said Wednesday the league fined him $5,000 for showing off the message --"Why So Serious?" -- Johnson had written in black marker on his T-shirt after scoring the first of three touchdown catches in a 49-31 win at Cincinnati on Sunday.

"Yeah, I got in trouble," Johnson said. "I don't regret it."Johnson said he was informed of the fine in a letter the league sent him by courier on Tuesday. NFL spokesman Corry Rush declined to confirm the receiver was disciplined, noting the league doesn't make that information available until Friday.

Johnson was surprised the league took action for something he referred to as "a fun gesture."

It happened early in the third quarter, when Johnson stumbled into the end zone for a 28-yard score. After spiking the ball, Johnson pulled up his jersey to show what he had written on the T-shirt underneath.

"Why So Serious?" was used by the Joker in the Batman movie "The Dark Knight." Johnson used the phrase to poke fun at Bengals receivers Chad Ochocinco and Terrell Owens, who have referred to themselves as Batman and Robin this season.

Johnson meant no disrespect toward the two Bengals receivers. And he even joked about it after the game with T.O., who played with Johnson in Buffalo last season.

"(Owens) was laughing about it, saying, 'You're crazy, man,"' Johnson said. "But it's all respect and it's all love."

This marks the second time this season Johnson has been disciplined by the NFL for an inappropriate touchdown celebration. He was fined $10,000 for pretending to shoot off a rifle -- mimicking what the Patriots' Minutemen do following a New England score -- after a 37-yard touchdown catch in a 38-30 loss at New England on Sept. 26.

Johnson said he's gotten the message and learned his lesson.

"I'm not trying to get any more fines," he said. "I want to keep my money."

Buffalo's 2007 seventh-round draft pick out of Kentucky, Johnson is enjoying a breakout season as a first-time starter. He's tied for fifth in the NFL with nine touchdowns, two short of matching the franchise single-season record set by Bill Brooks in 1995. And he's tied for 10th in the league with 728 yards receiving.

Coach Chan Gailey was disappointed by Johnson's celebration.

"I think he's not a bad person. But he's making some bad decisions along those lines," Gailey said. "Hopefully, I can help him make better decisions. That's part of my responsibility as well."

UFC 122: Yushin Okami Beats Nate Marquardt by Unanimous Decision

by Michael David Smith
In a hard-fought, hard-to-judge main event at UFC 122, Yushin Okami defeated Nate Marquardt by unanimous decision.

"Nate is a great fighter, but I thought I deserved it," Okami said afterward, through his translator. "I'm ready for the championship."

UFC President Dana White has said Okami will get that shot, after champion Anderson Silva takes on Vitor Belfort in February. Okami was the last man to beat Silva, winning by disqualification in 2006 when Silva illegally kicked him in the head on the ground, and both of them have said in the past that they want to settle the score. If Silva beats Belfort they'll finally do it.

Early End to First Round Cost Maiquel Falcao at UFC 123

by Michael David SmithMaiquel Falcao has been criticized for his handling of the third round in his UFC 123 win over Gerald Harris, with UFC President Dana White admonishing Falcao that he was wrong to play it safe after winning the first two rounds on the judges' scorecards. White said his message to Falcao after the third round was that "This isn't the Ultimate Staring Competition, it's the Ultimate Fighting Championship."

But while it's true that Falcao was unimpressive in the third round, it's been widely overlooked that the fight never should have gone to the third round -- or even the second round.

In fact, Falcao was about to submit Harris at the end of the first round, but the horn to end the round sounded seven seconds early, depriving Falcao of what almost certainly would have been a first-round submission victory.

Cesar Gracie open to Nick Diaz vs. "Mayhem" on Jan. 29, catchweight required

If trainer Cesar Gracie gets his way, Strikeforce welterweight champion and prized pupil Nick Diaz finally will meet Jason "Mayhem" Miller in early 2011.

The goal is for the fight to take place at a currently unannounced Jan. 29 Strikeforce event at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif.

But as Gracie told MMAjunkie.com Radio on Monday, the champ won't move up a weight class to get the fight booked.
