Bears' Cutler concerned about playing surface

By Fred Mitchell

Jay Cutler made headlines last week when he complained about the Soldier Field playing surface, calling it one of the worst in the league.

On Thursday, the Bears quarterback said he is more concerned about the condition of the surface than the site of Monday night's game against the Vikings.

As of midday Thursday, it appeared the game would be switched from the Metrodome to the outdoor TCF Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, where the University of Minnesota plays. The prospect of a frozen field does not appeal to Bears players, who could be playing for an NFC North title in that game.

"In the locker room it is kind of the buzz," Cutler said. "That's the concern of the guys. We don't really care where we play, it's just that that field isn't heated," said Cutler before the Bears practice at Halas Hall.
"They can heat it up all they want, but we're going to be out there for three hours in zero-degree weather and it's going to be a hard surface. I think that's my main concern with the guys in the locker room."

Even though the Bears have union player reps in Hunter Hillenmeyer and Robbie Gould, Cutler said the players feel helpless when it comes to having their feelings heard by the league regarding the playing venue.

"If they say play in the parking lot, we show up and play in the parking lot," Cutler said.
