Reed Doughty in Lineup in December Again

Washington's LaRon Landry was voted as the NFC's starting strong safety in the Pro Bowl in the fan balloting that ended this week. Landry, who has been sidelined since Week nine with an Achilles injury, won't be making the trip to Hawaii because the coaches and players, who comprise two thirds of the electorate, will find a healthier player at that position.

And Landry's injury opened the door for the less-gifted but more cerebral Reed Doughty to get in the lineup for the fourth time in the last five Decembers. Oddly, the only year that Doughty wasn't starting at this point, 2008, was the one in which began the season as a regular.

A sixth-round pick in 2006, Doughty played almost exclusively on special teams until Pro Bowl free safety Sean Taylor sprained a knee in November 2007. Doughty remained in the lineup when Taylor was shot to death two weeks later and was still the starter as the 2008 season began. However, a back injury that required surgery ended Doughty's season after just four games. Chris Horton, who had take over for Doughty in 2008, opened 2009 as the starting strong safety, but he suffered a season-ending toe injury in Week 9 and Doughty was back in the lineup. And when Landry's Pro Bowl season derailed this year, Doughty stepped-in again.
